Pope Leo XIV is American by birth, Peruvian through naturalization. Now he is the Sovereign Head of State of the Vatican.

Wonder if the IRS will expect him to file?

Not at all just bringing up an interesting legal conundrum. Frankly, I could care less and would think that our State Department should be working out some sort special exemption in this particular case.

Got me curious maybe I'll go read up on Golda Mier or Grace Kelly.

He likely has ZERO taxable income, anywhere.

He gets a $30,000/mo stipend as Pope but likely will give it away since his order takes a vow of poverty. He would be subject to US taxes if he has taxable income. Easiest solution is to drop his US citizenship but that may not be the correct political solution.

30 a month I'm guessing is the base and doesn't include endorsement deals. whistle

Money you earn over seas isn’t taxable until you bring it home. I cut a job in Cambodia a few years ago, made tons of money, until I brought it home. Still did okay, but not near as good as I thought I was. Pay was $1,500 per day, had to provide my own lodging and travel expenses, and pay a translator to follow me around. Sadly enough, having a full time translator was only about $40USD per day. I gave him $500 per week, and I’m pretty sure his firstborn is named after me lol

Good for you AK! That had to be an interesting gig in Cambodia. How many species were you cutting?

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

It was definitely a weird one for me, I couldn’t even begin to comprehend all the different sorts they had going on. Bucking logs in meters was also a new one. I’m in such a habit of the lengths we commonly use here (forest circus being the weird ones, asking for 11” of trim when everything else always gets 10” except cedar which is 12”)

When I was overseas, 50 years ago, we paid full tax of the higher countries tax, the the other country got full and the first got the remainder. Australia and Indonesia were not cheap but the rest of the area was to the point that we paid no tax in most of southeast asia. Ended up in Okinawa Japan and that was not cheap either.....jk

How can someone who is the leader of another country and has allegiances to it continue to have US citizenship? Very conflicting situation and I don't think he rates being a US citizen. I know it won't happen but what if the Vatican and the US got into a war, guess who's side he'd be on?

I haven't dug into it but I read one article that said there is a federal law that says that if a US citizen takes a policy making position with a foreign power they lose their citizenship. But then again we have awarded honorary US citizenship to others like Winston Churchill, who by right already was having an American mother.
