Wife says there's something in our wood burning stove. If I'd have said take a guess what, would you have ever guessed this? I thought I was going to have to wrangle a coon. Plus she left a gift.

I’ve had a wood duck come down my chimney three times in 43 years in this house. In 2021, I put one of those screen boxes on top of it out on the roof. That ended that.

I heard an awful racked one day coming form downstairs. Went down and found the noises coming from the hubby's bathroom, I asked what are you doing and he said don't open the door.
I laughed and said I know better that that .
He came out in a minute carrying a towel.
In it was a pitch black squirrel.
He was going to build a fire in the woodstove and opened the door to a squirrel running out, right into the bathroom. He chased it around and finally got it in the towel to take outside.

A chimney is close enough to a hollow tree that wood ducks check.them out for nesting sites. I know two families who had wood ducks come down their chimneys.

I've taken 9 wood ducks out of chimneys (7 alive and only one drake), one dead black vulture, half a dozen flickers, countless squirrels (grays and flyers, never a red), a multitude of assorted small birds and bats, and a bunch of raccoons. A simple chimney cap will prevent wildlife in the chimney.

I would have guessed a bat. I came home from work one day and was sitting on the front porch when I saw a bat flying about over the house. Then it disappeared. That made me go hmmm. Went and looked in the wood stove and two big eyes were looking back.

About every 5 years at the cabin we get female wood duck. The pipe ends in a "T" for better draft.......jk

Pretty common around here. I have removed several out of chimneys / fire places over the years. Ladies call and say they hear quacking in their living room, of course it is a friday evening. I figured there must be some alcohol involved. smile Opened up the fireplace and find a pair of wood ducks not sure who I was invading their nest site.

We just found a starling in the camp wood stove a couple of weeks ago. It was dead.

We gave it a proper funeral pyre.

I did a starling in a class B chimney in April , the issue is they die and fall on the electric damper and then the CO backs up into the house and sets of alarms which is better than not setting off alarms.

so when they heard it in the pipe they turned down the heat and called.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Had a woodpecker in my woodstove a couple years ago. The cap had gotten knocked off.

Here in AZ we get these flying ant swarms. Like little tornado vertical clouds. When they get tired flying they drop to the ground in a pile and crawl around. My Dad found out that a 1/4 inch screen will not keep them out. Swarm settled over the fireplace chimney and then filled his living room full of flying ants. That was fun cleaning up.
