Anyone ever try attaching your super stake and chain on the stake end with a welded j hook? It’ll fit the hole, just wondering if it drives and sets ok.

If no one does that what’s the best way you’ve found to attach chain to stake that’ll stand a little extra pulling without separating?

I think you’d be better off using a welded S hook.

Lock washer. Open it....put it and chain on....bend back flat and tack weld each side.

When I used SuperStakes....never had one compromised.

I’ve done the lock washer deal. Works good if my welding tacks hold.

Lock washer = 1 weld to break.

S-hook = 2 welds to break.

Better odds with a HD lock washer.

If you were asking about having a double swivel body (and welding the j-hooks) at the SuperStake end....I've never done that. Figured it may displace too much dirt to allow the SS to seat firmly. Plus...unnecessary use of a crunchproof swivel.

I've used welded S hooks, and welded cold shuts. The cold shuts are stronger, and would probably hold without welding. But if you can't pull the anchor, with enough leverage I can usually break the welded S hook. With a welded cold shut I have to use bolt cutters and cut the chain, even with a 12 foot log cut and used as cheater pipe on the puller I can't break one of the welded cold shuts, I believe you would break the #5 chain first, and I can't do that either.

Didn't think about a cold shut...but that would definitely be a strong connection. Just have to use a size small enough to go thru eyelet of SuperStake.

What is a cold shut?

I’m not familiar with it. I use welded s hooks. They break sometimes. Might be my crappy welding. But i have some rough ground here in Texas.

Anyone know a good place to buy 3/16th cold shuts reasonable. Swamp, I was talking about maybe using a single j hook for the connection and welding. The super stake would twist sideways slightly when setting. Just wondering if anyone had tried that.
Actually, the reason I asked is I burn through the split washers sometimes and thought I’d be better off welding j hooks. My welding skills are lacking I’m afraid.

No, I used to, but that place is closed now, and I haven't had a need for any since it closed.

I think i grasp what you are talking about kytrapper. Should be fine? The stake would just roll a but before flipping horizontally. I'd go drive a few in a couple areas, leave em for a week, then go back n try to pull to see how they work for you. Heck I may d that on the next ones i have to build.

Good thoughts...Carolina Foxer....experiment BEFORE the season...prevents issues later on.

I will second the cold shut talk from bearcat....they are tough! Used them for several years without
welds for my coyote trapping...never had issues....copied Charlie Dobbins ideas and it worked fine.

And I'll plug using a threaded quick link on super stakes....just be sure to close tightly WITH A WRENCH/PLIERS.
The ones I just finger tightened got stretched out.

Rigging Warehouse has 3/16 cold shuts for .41 cents each. Way cheaper than big box stores. I’ve never dealt with them but they came up first on a search.

It’s pricey but can just use number 5 chain for anchors and just cut the weld on chain link open a tad put on anchor pinch link back together and weld it back shut. You will bust the tab off the anchor before breaking the chain.

Lap links would work well too.

I think that could work, just could be a little iffy driving it in and possibly shearing off the j hook at the shank or bending it weird making it hard to reuse?

If a cold-shut is peened properly I really don’t know how a person could break one unless using some extraordinary force! Before I quit coyote trapping, cold shuts were my choice of terminal equipment connectors.
