Gang,

heading out to the FTA in Spencer, IA early this year and want to bang around in NE Wyoming and do a little fur prospecting - Red Fox being the target. Last summer after banging around and fishing in Idaho a few weeks I came home on the north route and took the back way down thru Broadus into WY and over thru SD to come home.. Was rolling right along so didn't take much time to smell the roses or see the sights as I was tired of being gone. I did however see several red fox killed on the road from just north of the Wyoming line into SD - It was enough to raise my eyebrows and scattered far enough apart it definitely wasn't family groups. Both pups and adults..

I don't think I can make it out there this year to trap. Alaska in August fishing, coon hunting the month of October in MI and then Montana in early November with my boy.. Just don't think i can squeeze it in unless it's late and then it looks like tough country come december.

Before I get too much older I'd love to spend some time in decent red fox country and trap a bit. Thinking about pulling an enclosed trailer out with my buggy and gear in it and camp out of my canvas tent as I did in Idaho.. Would want to put 3-4 weeks on the ground If i can make it happen. thinking early November as a starting time.

You all have been extremely helpful in a couple adventures I've put together and I figured I'd throw it out and see if anyone had any first hand info to share - Pretty low dollar fur, so not looking to hurt any locals pocket books.. Will leave the beaver and cats alone!!

Good news is red fox are predators in Wyoming, no license required to take them.
They are a boom and bust type animal here. I'd talk with the GW or biologist up there and ask about the population this year.
We used to have a bunch here in town but not in many years, Laramie.
I believe it was distemper that took our town population.

Nov. will be cold and snowy up that way, maybe deep or none at all though. Really think about the tent camping part.

The NR trapping license is not cheap but if you only take predators no need for it. I would be real careful about accidental catches though as a GW may give you grief if you don't get a trapper's license.

Wytex thanks for the insight. Between this and an excellent PM I received, believe I’m heading in the right direction.

Gerald, thanks for the kind words and look forward to seeing you in Spencer. Only down side I can find to this retirement gig is you had to get old to do it!

I cat speak for north east wyoming but most of my red fox caught are in the more agricultural areas. Yes I do catch some out on the sage prairies. Seek out water ways through the fields and any gravel pits in these areas you want to trap. This is what I have encountered in north west, wyoming. Good luck to you!

A guy going on a trip like that should bring an Amish trapper to do the heavy lifting !

Actually, the best furred redfox are in western coastal Alaska. A village dump is a great place to catch them. Some of the dumps are mostly surrounded by willows and are a great place to snare!

Tactical 20. Sure thought about stopping but kept on rolling.

Thanks EJ. I’m gonna do some snooping prior ro the FTA this year and after a couple PM’s I want to check some other areas. I just can’t make it happen this year so have plenty of time. That is unless I head back to Idaho. Plenty of open country and coyotes out yonder. Just hate trapping them things!

Cory, you just never know. Might have to drag one along!

I’m going to be in AK in august but we salmon and halibut fishing.

While turkey hunting in Wyoming this spring, in the Northeastish area (East of Buffalo, north of Gillette), I saw probably the most beautiful red fox I'll ever see in my lifetime. The white tip of the tail was just absolutely beautiful in color and was white at least 1/2 the length of its tail.. It's what alerted me to it in the first place. I actually thought it was a white plastic bag. We got to watch the fox at about 75 yards for 10 minutes, and we tried to get it to come in, but no luck.

I can recommend a great little airbnb on a ranch in Clearmont if you are looking to stay in that area.
