A couple weeks ago Dr increased my warfarin dose, wed morning I started bleeding, went to ER. I bled all day and most of the night. They were going to start transfusion if I got too low on hemoglobin or showed symptoms. She was out of the room about 2 am, I went to let more blood out, sat down and got real lightheaded, luckily I pulled the call string, they found me passed out leaning against the wall. Got me in bed, then I started getting bad again, waiting for the blood transfusion. My vision got sparkling lines in it, then it started going dark. One lady came in with the first bag of blood but said she couldn't get something to work, the computer or something wouldn't let them sign it out or something. All I could do is lay there and wait, praying I wouldn't die. It was probably 15 - 20 minutes before they got the transfusion going. They checked my blood pressure it was 60/40! I stopped bleeding about day break, then they sent me by ambulance to Sioux falls, almost two hours away. Spent 2 days and nights there. First they looked in my stomach to make sure the month old surgery wasn't bleeding, it was healed up good. They also did a CT scan in my hospital, but couldn't find the source of the bleeding. That evening they wheeled me from ICU to a room. It was in the old rehab unit where my wife and I spent 6 weeks after her stroke 3 years ago. I never expected to be there again, it's now oncology area, rehab moved to a new building. Dr determined the warfarin made a diverticulitis bleed in my colon, probably because of the higher dose I'm not supposed to take any warfarin for a week until new Dr appointment, I don't think I will take any more if she says to continue it. I thought the warfarin was for my repaired heart valve, they said it was for Incase I get afib again. The surgery in December gave me afib, haven't had afib since Jan. I came home with a heart monitor if no afib on it after two weeks I don't need warfarin any more, I don't think I want anymore anyway So glad to be alive

Dang Tact20!
Hope you continue to heal and dont experience that again! Me too! When I had my open heart surgery I figured I would be ok because he was a good Dr and all My biggest fear would be to die from a blood clot, or bleeding from the warfarin. I almost became a medical mistake death!

WHY WARFARIN?
My wife was on warfarin for over 10 years. During that time many trips to the ER with either too or too thick blood. Now its Elequis and the only problem you have to wait 72 hours for surgery.

I thought they had me take warfarin the blood thinner because of the valve repair, if you have a valve replaced then you have to take warfarin for the rest of your life to prevent blood clots. They had me taking it for the AFib, the open heart surgery in December gave me afib, haven't had afib since late January I think.

My brother has AFIB and they had him on Warfrin for a few years, Then they did a procedure called the watchman, supposedly most blood clots come from a chamber in the heart and they surgically close it off. He hasn't been on any blood thinners of any kind for 2 years. May want to inquire about that...IDK

Sorry you had to go through such an ordeal but glad you made it to tell about it.
When I was diagnosed with A-fib, my cardiologist (heart plumber) wanted to put me on blood thinner (warfarin) to reduce the risk of blood clots that cause strokes. I was hard headed and did not want to be warfarin. I was put on medicine that reduced the frequency and severity of A-fib episodes. My doctors and I came to a compromise and I took a adult dosage aspirin rather than the rat poison. After consulting with an electrophysiologist (heart electrician), I opted to have an ablation to try to stop the A-fib rather than manage it. I had to be on warfarin to have the procedure and for a couple months after.
No A-fib since, no heart rhythm meds and no warfarin since 2 months after the ablation that was 11 years ago.
