Wind is blowing 40. It’s an excellent day to die in the woods, so we’re staying put. I’m kinda bummed, I wanted to get some oysters today. I also had ambitions of putting out some crab pots, but if it’s too windy to saw timber it’s too windy to go play in a skiff.

I get ya, when weather doesn't want to play nice. You have have a life that many of us just dream about.

Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime

Some days I’m living my own dream. I could have definitely chosen easier paths through life, but I’m satisfied. Other days it feels suspiciously like a nightmare, but it is what it is lol

I have a really nice boat. But it’s in hydaburg, all I have here is my skiff. And it’s a death trap in decent weather lol. If you wanna go throw some pots out for me, you’re welcome to it bud. May wanna let the coast guard know ahead of time so they know where to search for your corpse lol

Unless you're getting paid, a few crabs isn't worth the beating and chances you take in a little boat...

Subsistence use, I couldn’t sell them if I wanted to. But I wouldn’t want to anyways, I’d rather have king crab than money

All you need is a chambered vessel, preferably a cat design.
They don’t sink.
The usually don’t flip over, and if they do, ya got a good place to hang out.
And a mustang thermal float coat…

What is the water temp ?

It’s cold enough you wouldn’t make it far. Usually in the mid 40’s. I just know these islands well enough to know when it’s a good day to stay tied up in the bays. I’m not trying to deal with a sunk skiff over a few crabs. I’ve had enough near death experiences because I wanted to go check traps, or put in a skate, or whatever the days idea was. Now I know well enough to let the weather do as it will, whatever I’m doing will be easier another day. Today is an excellent day to get into the Pendleton early and sit by the stove and burn some yellow cedar

Going on nicer days is a better option, 10 out of 10 times.

Yeah, even if I make it in one piece, who wants to deal with trying to set or pull up gear while it’s pouring rain sideways, and you’re fighting to just keep the boat in position? Lol

Or dead deer or trapping gear sling around on deck, at other times of the year. It’s one thing to be out there and have to push your way back through the black walls with white tops and something completely different to knowingly head out in cruddy conditions. I am by no means a fair weather fisherman, just have found my limits.

Sure, I’ll take some next time I go out. Gathering oysters isn’t all that interesting, just looks like me wandering around with a 5 gallon bucket at low tide in a few choice spots

I’m Haida, I have Canadian citizenship. But I much prefer Alaska. I spend the winter further north, as I’m partial to heavy snowfall and sub zero temps, which we don’t see much of down here
