I plead ignorant here but sows have young cubs in spring.
Can you tell boars from sows or how does that work?
A local fella was up there in May hunting.

You won't see sows and this years cubs in May. You may see one and two year old cubs with sows, but it's pretty obvious.

As waggler said. Just watch a few videos, you'll see the difference.

If you have a bit of time, I have followed Billy Molls adventures on You Tube for years. His series Modern Day Mountain Man is a real look into the logistics, weather, and individual experiences from a guides viewpoint. Very good watch and covers a wide range of situations and hunts. Well worth the time in my opinion. Enjoy

With an ethical hunter there is no problem. Most of the time an experienced hunter can tell whether it is a boar or a sow easily. There is no law against killing sows, just sows with cubs, so if the bear is a sow or you are unable to determine sex, watch it long enough to tell it doesn't have cubs before shooting it. Since nonresidents have to have a guide up there, hopefully they have an experienced hunter for a guide rather than a warm body the outfitter hired.

Yes, this guy is a shooter, not a hunter. He will pay a guide/outfitter and all he does is pull the trigger and thump his chest

The only way is to watch and sex the bear. We set scent to make them stand up, look for part. Cubs can come in first or late, let them hit the bait and watch them. I'd rather let a boar walk then shoot a sow.

In Alaska, a NR hunter must have a Registered or Master Guide. That helps to keep flatlanders from doing bone-headed things like killing a sow with cubs. The better (older!) guides are pretty good at being able to tell the boars from the sows, and seldom allow hunting clients to shoot sows. Much less sows accompanied by cubs.
