Redo the barrel with Durablue. There’s nothing that you can do to blend those spots in without doing the entire barrel. Durablue is awesome stuff and isn’t hard to do. I refinish a lot of guns and this blueing looks great.

Maybe dripped blood on it from a hunting excursion..? If you leave blood on a barrel, it will rust/pit the barrel.

Mossberg bluing can be sort of thin

I would guess blood , it does that.

https://www.brownells.com/tools-cleaning/paint-metal-prep/metal-bluing/oxpho-blue/
or
https://www.brownells.com/tools-cle...ula-4440-instant-gun-blue/?sku=082440002

very similar slightly different prep , brownell's has a video on application.

you won't make the pitting go away but you will protect it and get the color back.

This would be my answer. But since he seems kinda finicky, they make a spot blueing you can buy in little bottles and dab on with a little brush. Brownells, Midway, etc. should have it. I've used it other peoples guns and it works good, easy application. It may not match the color of your blueing exactly, but it'll match it a lot better than it does right now, and it will help protect those bare spots.

I'd just smooth them out with a fine steel wool and oil it.

I have an 11-87 that used to be black and is now browned, lol, all that matters is it goes bang....

Most gun places sell a liquid cold blue for touch up's like that. Not super great but it helps.

Drop it on a gravel road so that the wood gets beat up some. Then everyone will look at the dented up wood and forget about the barrel.

Get in the habit of wiping guns down with oil to remove fingerprints or anything else that will rust it when you put it up.
