Never had a year that the birds never responded to any calling not even one “hot gobbler”, birds are still in larger groups in places then some are off on their own in many combos. Hens are still flying down from the roosts in the mornings I have not kicked any off of their nest or seen any nests just weird.
Spooky as can be with no pressure that I know of in the area even a lone gobbler with no hens won’t respond to calls they just strut.
Last day today Doc texted me about going out this afternoon it’s turkey hunting so I’m in anytime, he has 2 tags to fill so no pressure there. LOL Seen a gobbler next to a farm place strutting around he’s been in and out of there all season. We slide into a driveway then work our way to the pasture edge to call to him using the old farmhouse for cover. Peek around the corner and 50 yards away he’s looking at me how he picked me out of the mess of trees, grass and old buildings amazed me.
Hit the only place that had potential with a couple hours remaining in the season seen 3 birds a couple fields over heading to good draw so we went to cut them off and try to call to them. We hike in set up and do some calling I hear a group on the opposite side of the draw up on the next flat area. Ticks and mosquitoes were thick warmest day in weeks. I know this place like the back of my hand so off we went up a drainage to the flat.
I peek over the rim and it’s a large group of birds in the tall ungrazed grass pretty much heads and necks mostly I set Doc up but no shot so I called a bit with limited response but they moved right some but were closer. Called Doc back we worked the rim to cedar tree to use for cover doc seen the one gobble so he pulled up on that bird boom. We crest the hill and he filled his 2 tags in one shot. Not intentional just lucky it was a Jake flopping behind the gobbler and not a hen.
