At times growing up poor, my parents always provided me a lunch for school

Now mind you it might have been a simple cheese sammich

Or it it may have leftover beans and rice from the nite before

On really good occasions, , it would be leftover catfish, headaches

and a piece of bread, maybe some berries from the garden or just wild.

As a youngin, I never went hungry, we were poor but well fed

Kids today would puke

There's a lot of places to trim fat from "welfare". In my opinion, school lunches is close to last on that list.

I got a different and imo better approach. Do away with govt schools. Make parents feed, and educate, them at home where they belong. Worked that way for centuries.

I see no issue with it, I look at it as a way to recoup some of my tax dollars. As much as I pay they can comp my 1 kid some vittles Better than welfare or people begging strangers for money on one of those fundraiser sites.

Do u think any form of government can spend ur dollar more efficiently as u? Nothing is free and when it comes to government for every dollar it would cost u it will cost the government 3 and ur taxes will keep going up

I don't think that's accurate, respectfully. The results we have to judge are the ones with 0% accountability for the Parents. Put the smack down on the parents, but feed the kid. I wanna believe the results will be different. I guess what I'm saying is with 0 accountability for the Parents, you are correct but crackin down on the crackheads would change the outcome.

Angela, I’m mixed on this. There are unfortunately some people who do struggle with keeping food on the table.. and don’t qualify for snap benefits. Medical bills, wage garnishment, etc.
And food pantries limit visits and how much food they can have.
Growing up at home, we only got 1 meal per day during the summer months.dad busted his butt working road construction but things were still rough.
When we rarely got breakfast it was through the commodities we got at the county ema building during distribution…we got corn flakes and oatmeal.
We didn’t get milk for our cereal or oatmeal… corn flakes and water was how we ate it… and we very rarely had sugar. I don’t think it’s bad to let kids have something decent to eat once in a while… it’s not like they are eating lobster and steak.

Of course there's that free breakfast before school too!

Here's some more fuel for the fire, coming from a parent who hears this first hand from his daughter who's still in school and my wife who works at a local public elementary school.

If a kid wants just an apple and a milk, they have to take the whole lunch, the cafeteria workers will toss the rest (the sandwich/applesauce/cheese stick/whatever) in the garbage (or tell the kids to). They used to let the schools have a "sharing" table set up for leftovers and extras and kids could take wheat they wanted, but most won't do that anymore, too many rules and regulations for who serves the food, allergies, etc.

Absolutely not, id be retired by now if I didn't have to pay them so much to support turds. Worst part is most of the time my tax dollars are spent on things im against. Ideally everyone would be self sufficient, my main point was they waste our money in a lot worse ways.

I've known a few families that had plenty of money to buy school lunches and have health care but we're getting free lunches and Healthcare thru the govt.one family is self employed with a foam insulating business and has a few employees. they have brand new trucks own close to a 200 acre farm snowmobiles,utvs land in another state with a cabin on it. My Question Is how can they get by with cheating the govt/taxpayers?

made into chili and was a huge hit !!

Michigan now like every state is so liberal , could you imagine attempting that today ?

I’d prefer to just pay for the kids lunch. My wife is a special education teacher (kids from bad homes, anger issues and such). I have personally met a lot of her students parents. Most are cracked out on drugs, some are actually trying to get it together. Social services have been contacted numerous times about some of her students, yet the state allows them to keep their kids. Buying a kids lunch at school may be the only meal they have that day. It’s a crock they let those kids stay with some of those people. Yet it’s the way it is unfortunately.
