My dads group was headed to Germany after bootcamp, he was playing football before the buses came and he shattered his knee cap. So 3 months later he went to Italy instead, while there they were issued tropical uniforms for invasion of Japan, the H bombs kept that invasion from happening. We buried him in May, he was 97.

They don't refer to the WWII folks as the greatest generation for no reason- they were.

My father died in 1970 at the age of 52 from cancer. He was part of the occupation force of Japan immediately after the war.
I often have wondered if the radiational fallout after the two atomic bombs were dropped were a contributing factor
to his early death. Your father and mine were part of "the greatest generation."

I’ve posted the story of my great uncle dying above. My great aunt is almost 90 and still tells the story like it was yesterday. The depot agent called from town and ask for my great grandfather. He told the girls he really needed to talk to him. The kids went and got him from plowing the field and he called back to town. The depot agent answered and they talked for a bit then he put the phone down and said “Vivi it’s for you”. She turned and ran out of the house because she knew what it meant. Harold her husband of a few months is buried in the American cemetery in Cambridge England.
