Anyone know a gunsmith or optic company that would refurbish a unertle bv-20 scope. Found it in the dumpster. The glass is very good on it. The external adjustment work as should. The main tube is metal and is rusted pretty bad. I would rather spend the money and get it back to what it once was, instead of the landfill.

That is a COOL find! I have 2 on rifles now. They are obviously old technology but they still work well enough. If the glass is clear and the external adjustments work, clean it up with 0000 steel wool and lots of oil and use it as is. Zeroing a rifle with external mounts is a real treat.
I have nothing clever to put here.

Who throws away a Unertl scope anyhow? Exactly! Then again, I tend to hoard parts too.

Try this place. I have no experience with them, so I can't comment on their work. I could probably have my arm twisted to buy it if you are interested in selling it.

I found this scope about 8 years ago. I knew what it was, the second I laid my eyes on it. Brought it home and thought I would like to get it refurbished someday. I honestly totally forgot that I still had it. I was going through some stuff this evening and found it again. I thought about selling it just how it is, but if i could could clean it up or pay someone to redo it at a reasonable price I would. I would like to see what it cost before I do anything with it. I dont have a gun that I think would represent it well eather. Decisions decisions!! Lol at the end of the day, it deserves to be used and not in a landfill. I have a 1939 Winchester model 70 220 Swift that is far from cherry and that scope would look right at home on it.......

Vintage Gun Scopes does good work. I've sold several scopes to them and seen a lot of pics of their work. No idea on costs for refinishing/rebuilding.

John Unertl was the founder and maker of this scope. He was adamant that this scope was to go to the USMC only as a sniper scope. I think I read where it was the scope Carlos Hathcock used. It was also used in WW2 by snipers. In the movie Saving Private Ryan it looked like an Unertl scope the sniper was using on his rifle.
I can't believe anyone would be foolish enough to throw it in the trash. Talk about stupid! These scopes are listed on Ebay and go for a lot of bucks.
Wife: That's the 4th time you've gone back for dessert, doesn't that embarrass you? Me: No, I keep telling them it's for you.

Back in the 70's and early 80'S, those were the top of the line target scopes. Note the rear mount free floats on a special plate mounted on the rifle.
