So, since the market Is in the crapper on most critters so I'm going to target skunks this fall.
Between me and trapping partner we have 75 DPs. My question Is what would be a good skunk bait?
I know I'm going to catch some coon and that's not a huge problem. I have tons of land to trap so it looks like a 75-trap line unless I can pick up a few more DPs. I guess I could run some 160s and some foot holds.
Another thing is I have a jerky shooter, and I used it to bait dirt holes. Lot less mess when it was used. So, I need a wet bait that I can shoot it into the DP. Hopefully we won't get into freezing weather. I also like to put some sheep's wool in the DP that wool sticks to everything.
Any Ideas.

I'd start with cultured egg as the base. My experience is skunk essence seem to, in a coyote lure or bait, yield way higher percentage of skunks in coyote sets than baits/lure without skunk. Friend of mine that catches big numbers of skunks really likes Jameson's Fireball, I believe, in cage traps for them. That's all I got.

Be where the skunks are to start but I get called into feedlots alot to trap skunks and I'll just Crack an egg and throw it in the live trap and set right along the feed bunks and silage pit worked better than anything else I tried. Lay the dps at more of an angle than you would for coon shorter legs they won't work the trap as well as a coon if they can't get in it.

I got all mine with dog food and some Hellfire smeared on a tree, sometimes some beaver tail oil squirted around cuz I got so much of it. Anything just to get their attention, they're scavengers.

I caught skunks in my dps last season using coon bait. Maybe a strong smelling cat food would work.

In over 50 years of trapping, I never thought I'd see the day when I would want to target skunks, lol.

57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

Thanks for the input.
I have some peppermint oil and I'm going to mix that in some fishy smelling dry cat food. I have a few more things I'm going to try. I'll let you know how things work out.

I use the fish flavored dry cat food.Heat up some bacon grease and mix the cat food ,a little liquid smoke and a little shellfish oil.The bacon grease helps the cat food stand up to the rainy weather a little better than just plain cat food. I also found if I tip the trap down at an angle a little the skunks work it a little better than straight up.

Bacon grease that should work. I know some people at burger King I should be able to get lots of grease.

The problem with bacon grease is you'll catch every possum within 100 miles. But once you get those cleaned out it'll work on coon. grin

IMO skunks have too short of legs to target them in DP's. Yes they do get caught in them sometimes, even a few of the very small ones, but I think smaller skunks and smaller possums are often the culprits when your DP is knocked down and the bait dumped/eaten. Just my opinion based upon using them for almost 20 years now. A well placed 160 or 220 seem to be much more effective to me.

DPs won't be the only tool. I plan on running some 160s in boxes and some foot holds. And those 160s will be in those smaller trails. Sure, I will be catching grinners and coon but that's trapping.
I have a decent coon market.

That's a good idea. Dry culverts, especially small ones under field drives are magnets for skunks, that's why I try to avoid them. lol
