Understand the process and what is allowed and where duties start. It gives you more confidence at the window.
As an example- Are you bringing groceries ? Yes I have enough groceries for 2 days. We plan on buying supplies.
Any alcohol on board ? Yes , we have 1 case of beer between the 2 of us.
More confidence you have the less grief in my experience.

I cross at the Peace Bridge when I go moose hunting. I have a rifle with me. Never had any issues, done it 16 times. They are always pleasant.
Now, getting back into the US? That’s where you’ll have trouble. Millions of people have entered the US in recent years, from parts unknown…..but me, a US citizen with a passport……they keep me pinned down for at least an hour when you have moose meat and a rifle. And I have all the needed paperwork. yup when you head to Canada with the reservations in hand of the lodge your staying at it is Welcome to Ontario! enjoy your fishing. coming back to the US seems like 4 guys fresh out of the marine corps giving you a job interview to be their supervisor.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Had an aquaintence recently get turned around at the border on his way up there for a week long fishing trip. He had two prior OWI convictions....the most recent one was 16 years ago. His buddies all told him he'd be fine due to how long ago the convictions were...he should have done the homework before he left. One OWI would have been fine if older than 10 years, two OWIs, not so much. He has to file for expungement before he'll ever get back north of the border. I chalk this up to his fault, not the canadian border folks. They have rules just like we do. A s someone else mentioned, take some time to research things and youll likely be just fine. That works both ways. I convicted with one in 1995 but it’s never been a problem, even as a young punk in 1997 with a 5L Mustang. The last 10-15 years the conversation never gets to that point where they ask about any convictions. When I tell the we’re I’m going and why it usually generates other side conversations. Never had a bad experience crossing into the US. Coming back can be different. I usually cross at a small rural crossing as the main one on I29/PTH75 can be hit or miss. https://www.canadaduientrylaw.com/owi.phpEven with a pardon they can still turn me around. The last time we crossed the guy gave us a had time because my daughter’s passport expired so we were trying to use 2 pieces of ID at the Pembina crossing. Guy said that that doesn’t work anymore, “OK, we’ll turn around” “Well hang on………..Have a good weekend in Grand Forks”……lol Some guards are just pricks and they can be at any crossing.

Coming back to the US BP took the inside of my sons car apart. Dash door panels seats etc. Left everything in a pile. He managed to get it together enough to drive. He had to pay a dealer to put it all back together. Never did find out why they did it.

Some years it's meat. Some years it's citrus. Some years it's potatoes. Some years it's poultry and eggs. If you research on their websites you'll click links to endless pages containing endless links until you throw your computer out the window. We have not yet found one concise page that lists restrictions for our type of fishing trip. Just more pages and more links. Sometimes, the current restrictions stated on their website are extensive, and then they ask you nothing at the border crossing. We've experienced that and left out all of our fresh eggs, our homemade venison jerky, our garden potatoes, all kinds of things - all for nothing. We sure didn't want to take a chance, but what a bummer.
