I like portable sets for winter canines. My version of portable dirt hole. Pack down an area, bed set onto snow, cover bait pocket fill with bait and/or lure. A #2 wedges tight about 4" from bait, a #3 7"(I always cover bait to draw them in close). Cover trap with dry dirt or well dried mulched grass clippings. As my trapping is in heavy cover I use drags when ground is solid and it save canine from damaging portable pocket pocket by letting them move away.

I really like that set up. I use myself but with drags. Love to bed in snow. But for me. A lot of times is hit or miss. As it a lot to maintain in snow. I wrap my traps in plastics bags. And am able to keep line going in in a bad winter. I will too cut bevels in logs this offseason and keep around for snowy days

I found out quick that if you’re not using the super cheap high tensile bags in the snow, they’ll grab the snow when set off and not break, ends up looking like a sausage ready to burst. MB750 sitting on the trail with a tight bag of snow. I just went back to crumpled wax paper. An hour after setting, the bed snow is solid and a bit of paper keeps it from freezing down. I was starting to wonder about the sets being functional after some snow and slowly riding over them with the skidoo, but low and behold they were ready and did the job.
Depends on where you’re trapping, but the only lumber I’m hauling is firewood for the shack. But having said that, I do have some 60-80lb pole stubs that I just leave in the bush for drags in some spots.

If this thread is about snow trapping with flat sets and /or trail setting bare ground, I’m all in! When the Michigan DNR took away our snaring in 2005 I taught myself how to use footholds in place of snares and not only be successful but be competitive with snare catch numbers pre-2005. I never hesitated using trail sets where ever I found a set location pre-winter or during winter-time trapping which was down in the tag alder swamps in Central MI. I have a handful of videos depicting this on my Youtube channel but for all practical purposes I made this video to explain what my other videos were showing especially winter-time trail setting.

Great video Seldom!
Last season was great conditions but the season before was brutal with temps from -40 to above 32 over a week. I’d hate to work in those conditions every winter!
