responded to the way off topic thread on boiles....but though I'd ask here....

When we were kids we used plain white bread dough baits to catch "Roach". which I found out later were Golden Shiners. Caught the big ones, over 10", cause that was just fun, and the little ones for live bass bait....catching the bait was more fun, lol
But does anyone else call large G shiners "roach" or is that just another old time local name for them here?

all the old time gill net guys here called them "mill roaches". They will jump in the skiff with you when spooked.

Never argue with a fool - they will drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

Could be...This area was colonized early by English settlers, there's a bunch of old terms for things that are common to around here only...like Torups for snapping turtles...Those fish do kinda look like a big G shiner, so you're probably right....

Golden orfes, which are similar to the fish called roaches, have been introduced in the US. People used to keep them in decorative ponds a lot. Koi have mostly replaced them in decorative ponds now.

I've always heard the called golden roaches and golden shiners depending on who I was talking to. Catch a bunch in the local ponds while bluegill fishing. I tried eating a large one once...ONCE.

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

Corn meal corn syrup flour and water. Heat it up in a pan until you can form it into a 1" ball. Run that ball under running slightly warm water to check for firmness. They hold pretty good and dissolve slowly.

Wet your hand and grab a handful of Wheaties, kneed it with your fingers till it gets sticky and forms a ball, works great for Carp and Cat.

Used dough balls a lot as a kid. I don't remember the different recipes but this one did ok. Use enough water to get the consistency your looking for. You can add a little corn juice or vanilla if ya want. Once you get the hang of it it'll stay on the hook pretty good.

1 cup of cornmeal
1/2 cup flour
2 tbs of molasses

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

We catch these in WNY or at least ones that look like them in Chautauqua lake and lake Ontario. We call them Rudd
