More often than not, they were baited with an apple or ear of corn for deer. The muzzle is only inches from the animals head so a 22 worked just fine.

I remember reading about a wilderness trapper that set one of those up at his trapping camp for a fox that kept coming through his yard at the same time he had an old bear pit trap that he reset because a bear was doing damage to his cabin, came back a few days later to find the bear dead from the set gun and the fox in the pit trap

Like always never knowing just what you will encounter on the trapline is what keeps me for one coming back to it every year
