If any of you are building drags using cotton spindles for the drag points, I assume they are exceptionally hard. I have a few drags with them and they seem pretty tough. How are you cutting the button off? Torch? Saw? I’m going to build a bunch more drags and was considering using them for the points.

Seems like it was decades ago when there was quite a bit of conversation of folks using them for drags points but only a vague memory since people and subjects come & people go and were of no interest to me!

I leave the button on and just put it where it’s right on top of the round rod or whatever you’re using. I do cut a sharper point into the end of the spindle. And prefer to 7018 the spindles

The spindles are probably cast steel so Wild Rag is correct, E7018 (or another low hydrogen stick electrode) or mig sc.

I have 7018 in my arsenal. I had planned on sharpening the spindles. I have some drags I bought that have the sharpened spindles and they dig in very well.

6011 is fine. Leave the buttons on weld both sides
If useing magnetized steel like sucker rod do a root pass first

Have built hundreds of them have not seen it neccasary for 7018 yet
After pounding in i have no idea how many in the ground

LOL! Don’t know about useless though I never had the need to use them but there was a little about others using them left in the old memory bank.
