Are skunk hats a deep market or will trappers likely overproduce this season? Most trappers complain about skunk and toss them so will be interesting to see how many skunk are on the next FHA auction. Fur buyers probably won’t drop $80 into a skunk when levels have been $10-20 past few years.
Exactly, why now doesn’t seem to make sense I’m sure wissmiss might have ideas for us. A retired person could make decent money driving around picking up road kill in some areas.lol

Have never tossed a skunk in my life. It's always paid decently especially with the essence

Fur Harvesters does not run a good auction whatsoever. I had multiple online bids and the auctioneer started the bid at my max, instead of the opening price. Who does this?? A second lot I was the high bidder but the auctioneer sold it for a lower price to someone else for less. Seriously, Fur Harvesters needs to get their act together. This is pathetic.
My better stuff most always does better at furharvesters. I take the time to put my furs up to impress the graders. There is no premium on really good stuff at GFW. As you move down to average stuff and lower it seems your better off saving time and going to the truck.
Oley - very interesting comment on your online bids. Between myself and a friend, we had close to 200 on line bids and everyone of them started at the minimum price. In fact, many of the items we were able to buy at less than our maximum.
May I ask how you your online bidding? We can discuss this via PM if you wish.
I’ve bid this way for the past 3 auctions plus this one and have been very pleased with the way FH handled my online bids. There has been a rare occasion where one of my bids was overlooked, but that can happen in the room as well.
I think it is great that FH offers the online bidding option. Saves me the expense and hassle of traveling to North Bay.
Ther must have been some serious bidding to get 2000 skunks sold at a $80.00 average. So, I assume that some bidders didn't get any skunks. I have 10 farms to trap and 67 culverts that are connected to public hunting grounds. We can't trap any other ROW culverts without getting the adjacent landowner permission. Might have to start knocking on doors. And I'm betting that most of those skunks weren't taxidermy skinned. But It looked like the top lot went for $90.00 some dollars. I'm going to taxidermy skin all my skunks. That Is if I catch any.
If you are sending the skunks to FHA, don't bother taxidermy skinning. They just go in the same lot as other skunks based on the size and stripes. Badger are lotted as complete, meaning feet on, but skunks are not.
It was fun watching my 4 skunks start at $28 and ending at 89.....lol. Johnny R said the main buyer had serious competition this time. Not bad for 1/2 hour of work to board it. I googled the jewish hat thing and there's nothing about them using skunks......
"The shtreimel is typically custom-made from the tails of Canadian or Russian sable, beech marten, baum marten (European pine marten), or gray fox. The shtreimel is almost always the most costly article of Hasidic clothing.[13] Usually, but not always, the bride's father purchases the shtreimel for the groom upon his wedding. [9] Nowadays, it is customary in the United States to purchase two shtreimels; a cheaper version, called the regen shtreimel ("rain shtreimel"), is for occasions when the expensive one may get damaged.[9] In Israel, due to the economic circumstances of most members of the Hasidic community in that country, the vast majority of shtreimel-wearers own only one shtreimel. The shtreimel manufacturers (shtreimel machers) keep their trade a closely guarded secret."
