ScottW, I’m with you. Public land was set aside by the greatest president in U.S. history, who understood the long-term value this land would provide toward not just recreation, but CONSERVATION. Without this land, the North American Model of Conservation would be lost, along with all the hunting and trapping rights every person on Trapperman enjoys. These dudes don’t get it, don’t want to get it, and won’t ever get it. It’s a selfish mindset.

Trapping sure pays better than those two jobs. One coal mine probably supports more families than all the trapping in Wyoming.

Privatizing public land will make us like Europe. Or Texas, where no one can hunt, trap, or recreate anywhere unless they are either rich and pay for the privilige or are employed by the landowner to "manage" the wildlife.

I strongly suspect that the vast majority, if not all of the ground you personally hunt and trap on is public. You obviously don't believe it will happen to you, but these proposal would open the door to all that land being sold and no one but those approved by the buyer being allowed on it.

What would really help stop these sales is if more people were affected. Once again I am completely against the sale. In the early 2000's I hunted antelope, elk, and mule deer on public land. Folks out West would not like it but they need more out of state outdoor folks coming in. Federal land is owned by everyone in the US. However a NR Elk tag in MT is $1100 so for your average Midwestern/Eastern deer hunter that hunt is never going to happen even if self guided. Now if they make federal land NR tags cheaper since the whole US is paying to keep them up things might change as more people are affected. Fact is like it or not the vast majority of Americans will not be affected if sales occur, outdoorsman or not. The whole state of WY can be up in arms over the sale but the state of FL has 40x's the number of people who if they go to WY will just hit Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. Say 2000 people from FL hunt in WY every year. That is 0.005% of the population of FL. If WY has 60K NR hunters a year that equates to roughly 0.002% of the US population. Just using WY as an example.

Hate to tell you bearcat2, but privatizing public land has been happening to me for over 30 years. It has supported a lot of local and non local economic activity. Hunting has not changed much other than increased opportunity for new landowners to hunt from cabins. Probably more recreational trappers because of this too. Still endless public land to operate on too. It will take decades if not a century before this place even gets close to only 50 percent public land. Much of the public land is worthless.
