I always try to buy domestic when possible. Sometimes that is just not possible.

Wife is in the middle of a kitchen remodel, have gotten 3 kitchen sinks in that are damaged. $500 a pop. She has been successful in getting her money back on all of them. I realize a lot of the stuff I buy/order daily is from China. I just try an minimize it as best I can.

I watched videos of Middle Easterners making car parts in a barn with a dirt floor, wearing pajamas and no shoes. After 3 trips or so I get a part that barely works/fits when I try to install it. Where is the savings in that?

Do you know what the AVERAGE wage is in America?? It's $30.67/hr. In Vietnam it's $4.35/hr. In China, it's considerably higher at $19 something, BUT in China their lowest minimum wage is also $1.47/hr... yes, less than a buck and a half an hour.

How do you expect American companies to produce zip ties or tupperware for anywhere close to the price of foreign made stuff? We've voted ourselves out of the ability to manufacture throw away items for a reasonable cost. The only things American companies can AFFORD to manufacture are things that come with high price tags.... vehicles, medicines, computer components, rocket ships, defense equipment, etc. They can't pay people $15-20/hr to manufacture the stuff to stock the shelves of the Dollar Tree.

Tupperware, a company that manufactures SOME but not all of their food storage containers at a U.S. plant can still be purchased if you want American made. They're only $100 for a 4 piece set. Just make sure the ones you're buying WERE made in America....

Could not possibly have anything to do with government regulations like the epa, safety and workman's comp. The government increases the cost to do business in this country quite a bit.

yep, it does. Best thing we could do is charge a tax at point of sale for all imported stuff that would cover SS, workman's comp, and all the other gov't forced costs and remove those costs from domestic suppliers.

Regulations, taxes, fees have ended many a business the majority probably never get started.

Problem is, a lot of the American made stuff these days is even junker. With the costs of wages and overhead from government regs in America, it has to be, to even compete in the same ballpark as the Chinese junk that pays a fraction of the wages and doesn't have to worry about things like complying with EPA regulations. I'm willing to pay more for quality, but I'm not will to pay more for absolute garbage just because it has a "made in USA" sticker. If price and quality are similar I will buy the US made product (although unless I know the company personally, I take country of origin labels with a large grain of salt) otherwise I consider the use I am going to use the product for and decide which is more important to me for that product, quality or price.

As far as most worthless import products I've bought? Probably aftermarket parts for ATVs and snowmobiles that don't fit. You learn after a while what brands are fairly reliable and what ones to avoid (anything labeled Caltric at all costs) but these companies importing junk are constantly coming up with new "brands" to label their products with.
