What is a good way to remove light rust from a necker 600. was brand new when bought yrs ago an put away in the shed.

Found it again when in the process of cleaning the shed out, it had fallen down to the floor unseen.

No pitting that i can tell. any ideas Vinegar maybe?

Steal wool and maybe little vinegar. Clean and wipe down with a light oil.

Oil and steel wool for that. I wouldn't use vinegar on a knife. Transmission oil and steel wool works well to remove rust on guns without destroying what's left of a finish, I imagine it'll work well on that too. Mineral or vegetable oil would probably be fine too if you don't want to use trans oil on something you'll use for fur.

Neck out a coon, then throw the knife on the work table. If you'd'a done that before you lost it, we wouldn't be here right now. smile

Get 0000 grade steel wool to start. The finest , least abrasive one. Safe to use on blued surfaces without damaging the surface. Kinda like 4000 grit sandpaper , least to cause harm.
Go up in grades of steel wool if needed , 000 grade or 00 grade. But start/test your item with 0000 ( extra fine ) first.

No need for steel wool.

Just use electrolysis. The rust will disappear.

Try some oxalic acid as that works good on stainless steel, which a Necker 600 is make from. Light rust areas you could mix some baking soda and water and apply, along with other methods listed above.

Your knife looks like it has carbon steel surface contamination is all. Where ever something steel rubbed or banged against the knife it left some carbon on the SS surface so it rusted not the SS.. Same with the bevel since the knife had not been used, the surface rust on the blade could have been in contact with some carbon steel tooling, even a sanding disc that had been used on carbon steel then used on your blade/‘s bevel will contaminate the SS. No big deal but NEVER use anything carbon steel or something used on carbon steel on SS. There is a reason why welders only use SS brushes and make sure of which brush is used on carbon steel and not on SS!

If you want to see a rusty-looking mess is when a tig welder finishes his SS weld and uses a carbon steel brush to pretty it up and weld lays outside for the dew to get on it. LOL

I'd use a very light oil and a fine whet stone. likely it could use a little touch up anyway.
