So I bought this thing for $50. Ive always kinda had in my head to have one of these setup to scald hogs via wood fire in. It might be fun to have a portable hot tub like to show up to a bon fire with. lol.

Anyway do these marks mean anything to anyone?

Ever re finish one of these to where i could rewhite the top side?

I was half thinking about scrubbing her down and painting it with black stove paint or something?

Is there a chrome paint or something fun I should look at?

Any other ideas?

are you wanting to use it for baths in a period bathroom or for something else?

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

We had one growing up, no shower and only one bathroom. Yours is a Standard Sanitary Manufacturing. You can refinish the porcelain, it's a process. The #5 is the size, is there a plate on it under the 10-30-14?

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

We have one next to our shower, great for soaking in. We wire brushed the outside and feet and painted it with a good quality white enamel paint before installation. I also covered the overflow so I can fill 'er to the rim.

I've seen them where they were stripped down and re-porcinilized (?) LOL, and others where they hired an artist to paint them with a pastoral scene, and they all came out great, Kinda spendy tho, but worth it. Not easy to rig for showers, not much shoulder room for turning, and very high sides with a very rounded bottom makes them a challenge to get in/out of. but that one seem pretty flat.

I know I wish I had keep the one I used to have. Took some time to warm that cast iron up but it stayed warm. The slant back was comfortable to lean back and it was not only long enough to stretch out I'm but infact large enough for two to be comfortable. If I could find another I would buy it for sure.

When we were kids we had one in the ground next to the little Crick that ran in the back yard. We had a garden hose in and one out both on siphon. It was great for keeping crayfish and minnows in

We use them in single and doubles to water cows with floats on them. I have seen a lot of them refinished on tile jobs also.

I bought a house, built in 1907, and lived in it for about 20 years. It had two clawfoot bath tubs, but I never looked for any markings.

From the net .....
(SSM Co.) The name Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company was used from 1899-1929.

History of SSM Co. -

1887 - D&M (Dawes & Myler Mfg Co. in PA.) was formed when Edward Dawes left Standard Mfg Co. and joined with William Myler. (By 1893, they only made iron tubs.)

1899 - SSM Co (Standard Sanitary Mfg Co) was formed when Standard Mfg Co., D&M, Ahrens & Ott Co., and 6 other companies merged.

1929 - American Radiator and Standard Sanitary Corp. formed by merger, but they continued to produce cast-iron tubs under the Standard Sanitary Mfg. Co. label.

On the bottom of the tubs, you'll find initials for the factories:
The SW stands for Standard Works (factory), AO Works (Ahrens & Ott factory) and DM for Dawes & Myler factory. Though the factories used their own names, the fixtures were produced under the Standard Sanitary Mfg. Co label.

1948 - The name was shortened to American-Standard

1967 - Hyphen from name removed.

Today the company is Trane.

I had an American Radiator and Standard bath tub , not a claw foot
my house is 1909 and by the news papers in the wall of the bathroom they added electric and indoor plumbing in August of 1939

when I was researching that , I believe I also found were they stopped most or all production during WWII starting in 41 and the 1948 shortening was starting up post war production as by then they did more than radiators , tubs and Sanitary

I don't recall where I read that and it was several years ago
