I’m going to be making my waxed sand for the season soon. I’ve been using heavy Rubbermaid totes that can hold 100 pound and will continue to use those to haul sand on my four wheeler. My question is about bulk storage. I have four 50 gallon white plastic drums with the lids cut out. Despite being recently pressure washed they still have a slight plastic/chemical smell. Any thoughts on how best to deodorize them.

Fill them full of water with a box of baking soda in each one? Set them out in the sun for a while and let the smell dissipate on its own?

I use the same totes as you for packing my waxed dirt on my 4wheeler as well. I also store my bulk in plastic trash cans with lids from bimart. All I do is wash them out with hose water and let them dry a day. I store all of my stuff in my basement so it stays pretty cool which may or may not make a difference as far as the plastic smell. If your barrels had any kinds of chemicals in them it may be hard to ever get the smell out because plastic is so absorbent.

I noticed one barrel has almost no discernible odor to me. The others, all the same barrels have just a slight hint. I’m hoping just some time will help. I just cut the lids out and pressure washed them a few days ago.

Might want to put clean unscented heavy duty trash bags in them as a liner to help protect against any foreign odor.

I never have trusted plastic totes or bins for scent control without adding an offsetting odor for the wax to absorb. Maybe I’m over cautious but that’s my opinion and in addition moisture allows for mold on waxed surfaces adding to absorbable odor. Here is how I store my waxed sand, waxed dirt, traps, and why. Worked for me but I’m not anyone else!

As a side note to remember. If waxed material takes on odors as easily as reputed, it will also take on the odor of the soil or medium the trap is bedded in! Ya can’t have an odor theory just one way and ignore the other by golly, that’s liken to being a little bit pregnant!

Might even try to fill them with dirt for a week. Not the dirt you’ll use for your season, just something to take the smell out of them.

I use plastic 30 gallon barrels, I've cleaned them.
As I'm putting waxed sand in I put some sage leaves in every so many scoops.
Never had a problem with this method.

Let me sugar coat this

I use dry grass clippings and straw in the boxes with my waxed traps. I don’t live in safe brush country. I used to live in safe brush country and used sage back then.

I use plastic garbage cans (bought new, never used) and clean five gallon buckets. Never had a problem with odor, but I left them out with the lids off for a while.
