I became acquainted with Monte Poole from Kansas. He builds some great trap accessories including a pan that fixes the dead spot in an MB 650. Here’s a shot of one of mine with the new pan.

And the old and new pans side by side.

They take a small bit of fitting but nothing difficult. I can share his contact info in a PM.

How far off away from the edge of the pan is the bolt? Can't be more than a 1/4"?

Not quite the measurement I meant.

Measuring parallel to the pan how far away is the center of the bolt.

Course from the picture there, it doesn't look like there's a gap so there's still a dead spot because the pan bolt is still under the pan. The pan bolt has to not be under the pan to completely eliminate the dead spot.

I could see the angle of the bolt supports helping slightly with the dead spot. If the foot presses on the back edge of the pan, it MAY be able to pivot the pan forward easier.

Would be curious to see some testing with a pressure tool on thr pan in avrious spots in and around the dead zone on both designs.

I’m busy this morning but when I get home this afternoon I’ll set the new pan to 3 pounds in the center and an old pan to 3 pounds in the center. Then I’ll check front and back on both.

I’ll dig out a MJ600 and compare pans but at a glance the new one looks pretty close to the MJ.

So I did my little test with a Sullivan trap pan gauge. I set the modified MB650 at 3 pounds in the center of the pan. The outside edge tripped at about 2.25 pounds, the center at 3 pounds and the back edge almost bottomed out the gauge at what would be 4.5 pounds. I checked my only MJ600 the same way. It has a Mikes type trigger. Center of the pan broke at 2.5 pounds, the front edge at 2 pounds and the back of the pan just like the modified 650, it almost bottomed out the gauge so 4.5 pounds.

Testing an unmodified 650, I set it at 3 pounds center of the pan. It broke at 2 pounds on the front and I’m guessing 9-10 pounds. It may have been more.

The new pan improves the MB 650 in my estimation. I don’t think with the MJ 600 or the MB 650 you’ll ever eliminate the difference in what it takes to fire trap between the front and back of the pan. However the dead spot common to the MB 650/750 can be improved with Monte’s pan.

That’s for certain. I don’t know why they didn’t use the same set up on the MB650 and 750 from the start.

Thank you for the testing. Sounds like an improvement for sure.

Well you really can't fix the dead spot on the 650s. This new pan roll definitely soften it. To completely fix it you'd have to basically make a new trap.

Dead spot is always going to be directly over the pivot point of the pan closest thing to not having a dead spot are the dog less Montgomery systembsnd the Harris center-fire traps

I never worried about that dead spot when I used them. I just set them and caught a lot of animals with them.

Yup, Canebrake, that is absolutely correct,we all have and do yet today BUT there are always some of us who want to know WHY something is the way it is because it doesn't sit quite right for us the way it is so we question ourselves can we make it better to our mind with some head & handiwork. I personally applaud the open mindeness of the "thinkers", "tweekers" & "inventors" within the trapping community!

Nothing wrong with that.

Is it possible to purchase MJ600’s anymore? Are they currently in production?
