Is there any method to trap coyotes that will exclude black bear?

Blind trail maybe, not using anything that smells.

You can lower your percentages of bear bycatch by not using any bait or food lures. Blind sets of course being the best, followed by sets using just urine and/or droppings (dog crap in particular seems to be of interest to coyotes and wolves while getting almost no interest from bears), next up is gland lures, and some of them will have additives that have more interest to bears, I'd try and stick to ones that are mostly glands with no or very limited curiosity odor ingredients added.

But if you want the short answer... Swamp Wolf gave you the correct answer.

I would suggest, using a smaller two coiled off set jawed trap. Something like a 1.75 Victor.

These traps will hold coyotes. Bears should pull out very easily, if they even get caught?

Thanks everyone. I usually have a couple sows with cubs hanging round so I don't think a smaller trap would help. The darn bear are spending less time in their dens and more time out looking for food, that makes it pretty difficult to trap coyotes for most of the year. We manage to shoot one or two bear locally every year.

I followed my own advice before we lost our early wolf season (and any good wolf trap will hold a bear) and never had to release one. But I do know others that have caught them on gland lure or even pee posts. The incidences are much lower however. Try to avoid any food lures at all costs. And I can tell you from testing that BTO makes an excellent bear lure. Haha
