How many of you make some of the more loose/liquid lures squirtable?

I have a mixture that I use with good success that is 1 oz gland lure and 3-4 oz of quality urine. I was thinking maybe taking some of the more runny lures I have and just straining them through a fine mesh/screen and funneling them into a squirt bottle as well. Maybe add a bit of urine to it as well to keep it from gelling up as much? Extended periods of cold/freezing is not a real concern for us down this way during trapping season.

Thanks for any input.

Only squirtable "lures" I use are urine and BTO. The BTO is a thick liquid in warmer temps but in colder temps (I've used it done to -20 or a bit below) it is more of a squeezeable gel than truly squirtable. About the consistency of honey at 60 degrees. You're not squirting it from the seat of your snowmachine or out a truck window, but you squeeze it out on the side of a stump or tree and it will flow down the side slowly.

Squirtable baits yes but squirtable lures would seem to have an issue with volume of the application.

I love squirtable lures. Eliminates the need for a lure holder that can get hooked out of the hole. Most of the time on remakes I just wallow out the old hole and the lure odors stay at the bottom of the hole.

You can mix some lures with urine and strain if needed.

I make a urine based lure with added chemicals that is really killer on canines especially fox. I use it in a 4 oz squirt bottle and use about 10 drops per set.

LOL, when you mention using “drops” of lure, brings up memories of the 70’s when I found what I thought at the time was the best fox lure out there. It was sold by Cronk and supposedly an Arnold’s recipe. I believe it was Arnold’s Fox #1 and I used it in my Disco dirtholes by the drop, 7 drops to be exact and no bait! At the time my competition were all using a Lenon’s fox lure and Hawbakers 500 and I never took a backseat to their catch numbers. I know this because me and my competitions sold our fox in sort of a co-op for some years so all 5-6 of us knew each others numbers.

One of the lures I have is one of yours TS.

May just tinker around with it and see what comes of it.

Years ago most all lures were fluid based and sold in Boston round bottles. Why? They are more economical to build, easier to build, easier to bottle and provide a larger profit margin in most cases. The down side is after sitting for a short period of time the bulk of the active ingredients separate and rise to the top of each bottle.

This typically shows how much fluid base material is in each bottle. Some have learned to use surfactants and thickeners to help keep the actives suspended. This can at times cause application problems in colder temps.

Many will remember that fact from many years back. I too once had a fluid based lure line back in the 70's and early 80's. I learned some very valuable information thru my experience in formulation over my lifetime and being a commercial trapper for many years.

Russ Carman also transitioned from fluid to paste type lures when he brought out his new lure line. He too learned and realized the benefits of a good active base in building a more durable and a very odor sustaining lure. Less messy and much longer lasting in all tests.

Placement of lure can be very important. Applying fluid lures, dripping lure or contamination to gloves and equipment does pose problems for the trapper if not reasonably careful. I am sure many have had this issue knowingly or by accident occur.

Everyone has their preference in what type of product that they prefer to use on the line. Its good to have choices to suit your needs.

Very good information Bob. For me on a coyote/bobcat trapline liquid lures are just too messy and frankly not as good of an attraction as paste type lures.

I have made several bait solutions/lures using pressed Salmon Oil as the base material. This worked ok. But I still prefer a lure that has a solid base material like horse meat, fish, bobcat, etc.

I’ve been using squirt lure at hay sets for a few years. I mix 16 ounces of urine with 1 ounce of a fox gland lure. Let “age” or blend for a couple of days. Strain through screen into squirt bottle. A quick squirt at the set and on to the next set!

I have one liquid lure i make presently. It holds up as well or better than anything else I make in weather and in the right applicator it's not messy to work with. A few drops will go a long way. Some liquid ingredients will hold up to weather as good or better than solids and are a good, active and very attractive base.

I can vouch for this stuff!

I like liquids in the summer. But they have to be squirtable.

Pouring lure out of a Boston round makes me angry real fast.

X2

I've used a couple liquid lures that came in Boston rounds, one was thick enough that I could swirl a stick or a chunk of pipe cleaner around in it and that worked alright, the other wasn't much thicker than water, with a few suspended solids in it. Kinda like having stirred up, silty swamp water in a bottle. I've still got most of it around, just never used it that much due to it being messy and a pain to use. Never really gave it a good testing because of those factors, but it didn't seem to be a dynamite attractor worth the hassle, so it ended up back on the shelf. But one you can squirt out of a bottle can be really handy to apply.

I use the woozy hot sauce bottles with dripper caps for thin, liquid lures. Similar to the bottles that Tabasco hot sauce comes in. These work pretty good as you can put a few drops at a set.
