I hitch hiked a bit. Worked day labor jobs. Stayed in cheap hotels, camped some. Got tired of it after awhile.

I think they used to call that a hobo. (Hobos did work day labor jobs like that.)

I dont know about now but there used to be places you could show up about 5 am and they would send you send out on a job. Unloaded a lot of trucks, packed pickles into barrels, dumped 50 pound sacks of beans into a hopper at a cannery, worked as a roust about in oil fields. got paid every day. was fun for awhile. had a backpack, small puptent, sleeping bag a skillet and a pan. 3-4 changes of clothes and a surplus army poncho. couple big canteens. dont see hitch hikers to often anymore.

Hitchhikers were common back in the seventies. They were often on entrance ramps to the highways. I haven't seen a hitchhiker in years now. Did the police start arresting them or did people just stop doing it?

I've never been homeless and hope I never am.

See hitchhikers down here on a fairly regular basis. Usually on the interstate or as mentioned, the ramps.

Proudly banned from the NTA.

Bother me tomorrow. Today I'll buy no sorrows.

Don't see many hitchhikers here, but the beggars are standing at a lot of the ramps with their signs.

I pickup some kids hitch hiking a few years ago in the Blackhills. I didn't put two and two together right away but im pretty sure they had stole a car wrecked it. Wanted me to drop them off at some reform school in Rapid City. I wanted no connection to it and just dropped them off at a gas station.

When Savell picked up that hitchhiker, the hitchhiker asked him, "Aren't you afraid I could be a serial killer?". Savell answered him, " No, the odds of two serial killers being in the same car are extremely unlikely."

Mid 1990s i picked up a guy hitching his way into the nearest town on a friday evening. He said he was lacking a license and all he wanted to do was play bingo. I made the same route every friday and picked him up several more times. That guy sure liked bingo lol. I probably wouldnt trust anybody enough to do it now.

Depends on your definition of homeless. Have been "homeless" several times, but not without shelter. Wilderness trapper staying in a canvas tent or an old log cabin. Staying in places I didn't own and could call home. 1982 built my own small house in rural Alaska.

Have lived by a RR track all my life, and remember as a kid seeing the end of the hobo's in the late 1960's.
...Had more respect for them over most of today's homeless.
