I want to start hunting groundhogs with my AR. All I have are 30 and 40-round magazines. I don’t want to hunt with a high-capacity magazine sticking out the bottom.

I see where Midway and others sell 5 and 10 round magazines.

My question is, what’s the highest capacity magazine that will sit flush with the bottom of the magazine well on an AR – 15?

I’m assuming the five-rounders will sit flush?

Eh...wot?

I think they had a factory 9 round at one time. I use the 20s mostly the 30s get in the way often and don’t help much on flat surfaces. The 20s are more stable IMO.

30,20 and 9 rd

Mostly, yes. Most of the five rounders just poke out a little bit as a stuck flush one would be hard to grab and pull out.

This one looks to be the most flush fitting.

I think you will be happy with a 10. Leaves enough sticking out to grab. Probably be even happier with 2 10s!!

Pmag 10 is almost flush. Close enough to not be a problem

on the right is a 9 round like LawDog posted, on the left is a mag that came from the factory with a remington 7615 which takes AR mags which holds 10 rounds, that 10 rounder is very hard to remove from an AR because all that thicks out is the bottom edge. the pistol grip sticks down farther than any 10 round mag, unless its a 20 with a stop in it cutting capacity to 10.

I bought some 10rd soft material AR mags very cheap I got shafted on EBay then. You could load them full set the mag on a table a it would empty itself on its own. Kind of funny seeing the cartridges flying around I gave them to a buddy.

have 10 30 rd 5.56 P-mags, and a couple 10 round 7..62 mags that stay loaded permanent and never had any trouble with them. Even my plastic 100 rd. drums are trouble free, no F2F even during mag dumps

I like the pmag 10 rounders for hunting. I just don’t want the weight or the size of a standard magazine for that

I’ve got 100s of 30s new and used several 20s and 1 10rd for ARs. Have a bunch of 30s, 20s for the mini 14 several factory 5 round ones also. 20s are my go to when I’m trapping for coyote that want to be shot at. They steady nicely standing , prone or out the window (legal here).

Thanks all.

I ordered two of the the Pmag 10-rounders. I have a bunch of their 30 and 40-round magazines and have never had an issue with them. I like that the 10-rounders only stick out from the mag well enough to pull them out if necessary.

Of course I had to buy two more boxes of Fiocchi V-Max's and a shooting stick to get over Midway's $99.00 free shipping threshold. grin
