Looking at new outboards with a pump.

I have a light weight welded 14 foot sled that I have owned since 86.
In the past I have run mercury in the 80 to 115 range. Currently have a Suzuki 100 at the pump.

Tohatsu’s are becoming popular up this way. Yamahas are known for sand intolerance with their water passages. Merc’s are pretty popular here also.
Suppose if you told us what kind of river bottom you plan to auger through it would lead to a better brand recommendation. If there is 4” or more water under the intake I would say value rules.

Glacial till so lots of rocks,,,,, one rock will shut down a pump.. I will install a intake gate rock cleaner.
There is 3 inches in the bad spots ,,,, 4” to more in the rest.
I do not have a tunnel ram so the intake is at about even with the bottom of the hull/ 1/2 inch above.

I am thinking about going less hp for weight because I am considering Tiller this time…

I also , except for the consumption of fuel, prefer a two stroke with a jet pump.
Probably because rich kids were beating me out of the hole as a kid when I was riding a sl and not a cr or yz
And the sound…..

The tohatsus have a bad rap from some of the guide services in Alaska and they are almost the same price now with a pump.

Mercury and Yamaha seem to be the most numerous around here

Mine's a Yamaha 115/80, bought it new in 2021 and it's been great since. I ride it pretty hard. I'm friends with a lot of Michigan river guides, and a lot of them have Suzuki motors that they installed jet intakes on. Other than that, Yam and Merc rule around here. I've never seen a Tohatsu with a pump, must not be a real popular choice in this area.

Go outside and do stuff.

I run a Mercury 60/40 4-stroke on a 17/52 flat bottom. It moves the boat very well. It is a 2011 and has been trouble free.

I bet a 80-115hp would really make a 14’ skip across the water.

I ran a 50 hp pump on my 15 ft Jon boat . Did fine but sucked gas like crazy. Do better with a 25 hp prop.
