Hello. I'm looking to pick up a few antique wolf traps. I intend to hang them on the wall, and hope that someday politics change and we get a wolf season back. I'm aware that many of you prefer the modern coils, and intend to add a few of those to the collection as well. So for those of you that have used long springs, what did you prefer? I'm aware of the 4.5 and 114 newhouse, as well as the 121 herters. I'm sure there are some that I'm not aware of. Any opinions, and reasons for them, would be much appreciated.

The sleepy creek 4.5’s are popular as a throw away trap

The Sleepy Creek 4 1/2 is the only longspring I've actually used and caught wolves in. The Cadillac longspring for wolves is undoubtedly the Newhouse 114, but I'd be sick if I set one of those and had it stolen. A few guys have used the Bridger 5, but I have one I picked up, and in my opinion it is not a wolf trap without some modifications. Another one people set for them some was the Newhouse 48, although due to its small jawspread it was usually used in sets for another animal, where incidental wolves were a possibility, rather than as a primary wolf trap.

I sometimes use NH 48's. They hold OK, but the jaw spread is not really ideal for the size of adult wolf feet.

livestock protection company makes quality long springs suitable for wolves.

Thanks guys. I own some of the Sleepy Creeks and intend to get some LPCs. I hadn't considered the 48s, I'll pick up a couple. I appreciate your input everyone. Any more ideas and experiences are welcome.

Newhouse 14 are essentially 48s with a offset. trappers used them in track sets commonly because of the size and are easy to slide under the snow into a track,

John Heart brought one of those to some trapping demos that our provincial ag put on. I thought it was an award for some kinda competition. They look to nice to use……lol

You said you would add some coil springs to the collection.

Then you must have a Alaskan #9 coil spring. There are 4-5 models over the years from different owners. From Steve Titus, Manning, Cochran, then Dean Wilson, and now JR Pedersen, the current owner.

I have some of the first hundred numbered by MC & Sons, North Pole, Alaska (Manning and Cochran). These are the oldest I have and there is a story behind them as well. Isnarewolves knows a lot of history about the #9. AKHowler owns the company right now. Both are members on here.

Hang a handful of Thompson XXL snares on the wall. They have caught more wolves than all the footholds. They are the best tool for the job.

My Super Wide will pull your broken down 4 stroke, up a hill backwards, with you on it!

A number 9 is on my list. I'm not sure of the jaw spread, if they're even legal to set here, but I need one in the collection anyway.

Thanks for the advice guys. I added a #48 to the collection last night, and I'll find a few more classics at the next couple conventions.

Has anyone tried the MB 750 Alaskans. Are they built heavy enough? Not a long spring but maybe easier to work with?

They'll hold a wolf, they are just terrible bad to freeze down, and they don't have the power to come up through the crust that a lot of wolf traps do, nor the jawspread to reach up through much snow. They are a pretty good dry ground wolf trap, but are my last choice out of the wolf traps I own for setting in the snow.

Have to be careful using them in snow……..but same with the others, 750 is just less forgiving. I had one bite through a snowmobile trail that I’d driven over twice. Good high pad catch, he made it through the willows and into the field, hooking up every 50yds or so. Caught up with him hung up good 1.5 miles away in the next swamp. They lock tight.
There a wolfer in Winnipeg who uses these exclusively and gets 10-15 wolves a year, they’re just not as forgiving as the big boys out there. No BS, Bridger 9, the Koro if you’re allowed……..the 750 isn’t my first choice, but I got a dozen of them….lol.
