Understanding why water is considered “hard” will answer your question and give you guidance. Everybody who has ever drilled a well try's to find that elusive “sweet spot” !

Sand, mountains of sand. Our well water at the lake is the softest, but the well is in an 80' bluff of sand and hardpan. Dad was a well driller in his younger years ... why he choose the sight for the well.

We have two underground rivers on the WA place, one goes north one goes south.
Both are sweet water , but the south is full of iron..

Ohhhhh duh. Thats like 200 yds and near a creek.

Lots of spring fed ponds in the area where they dig and hit springS.

A lot of it depends on where the well driller quit drilling the water well , sandstone is pretty as is coal , heaving Santos terrible gravel a bit better . that what we had a lot of in Southeastern Montana .
If they tag into the coal be very careful about a open flame near a open faucet or hydrant coal bed methane will come along for a ride so to speak ha ha !

You're friend along the snare line .
