I am thinking about putting a whole house fan in our hunting cabin to cool things off in the summer time. What are your opinions on them? Good/bad ?

Our house is 1800 Sq. ft. We have one - bought it at home depot. its installed in the center of our home where the hallway meets the kitchen and living area. Has 2 speeds, good power, not real noisy. It will really cool the house down.

I lived in a house in Kentucky that had one. After it cools off outside in the evening you can cool down the whole house, you can open windows in the rooms you want to cool off first, it will pull cool air in through those windows. I really liked it. The house did not have central AC.

Mine keeps me alive in the summer, love it. A LOT cheaper to operate than an AC unit. I got the whole house window fan we had as a kid down at my cabin. Really super quiet and effective. Many times I will get up, freezing my tush off, and shut them down.

My parents put a whole house fan in our house, when they put a huge 3 story addition on. The fan worked great at cooling the house when the temperature dropped at night. The fan was strong enough it would suck balloons up the stairs and your ball cap off your head, if you were under it. I wish I had one like it.

It will also suck those tiny little flies through the window screen. I like my mini split better.

Id not be without one. I have geothermal and it works fine, but Id rather have fresh air. When the temps cool in the evening, It goes to work. Theres also another advantage to them as they cool out the air space in your attic and add years to the life of your shingles. If I could only have one, Id take the whole house fan over AC any day.
