If you can, send a few pictures of the bark and some old bud scars. A full leave picture would also be helpful.

Looks more like butternut to me, but i'm no expert.

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

To me Butternut as well. The nuts have the typical oval or football shape that buttternuts are known for. Their sticky and hairy as well.

I've never seen walnuts grow in clusters like that. Usually 2 or 3 close together.

But I've never seen a butternut. It makes a great wood for box calls.

Doesn"t look like a walnut to me. We don"t have butternut trees around here so I can"t say anything about that.

Those leaves look more hickory-like to me, but would like to see more reference photos.

Look like a typical English/Carpathian walnut to me. Don’t seem nearly oblong enough to be butternut

Can't get a good look at the leaves, the nut covering looks like English walnut, , butternut I believe has sections much the same .as hickory nuts!
Those have that smooth covering , but as mentioned, I don't remember the nuts being in clusters like that.
Save some that you know don't have worms, and I'll buy some off you. I'll pay shipping also.

Butternuts are not sectioned husks, solid just like black walnut.

I have a number of butternut trees, and that looks like english/carpathian walnut to me. I agree with bigblackbirds

I really don't think I've ever seen a butternut then, as I always thought they were a very large type of hickory.

Show us the nut out of the hull later and that will clinch it.

To my eye it is not english or carpathian walnut. I'm not as familiar with heartnut and butternut.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

my first thought too, looks like Manchurian nut, a common ornamental here.

the nuts can be pointed or bluntly oval, it depends on the individual tree.
