For those who remember Reservoir Dogs, I always sided with Mr. White on the subject of tipping (waiting tables is a hard job, tip her and tip well).

But I was wondering. Is the percentage people leave going to change now that the tips are not taxed?

What are y'all going to do?

Nope I will tip the same. I always tip with cash for a few reasons. 1st so they could avoid taxes. 2nd Generally anyone waiting tables is not well off and tiping them in cash puts money in their pocket now so they don't have to wait tell Friday. When I was a kid mom was broke and sometimes would have to wait until she got some tips then run it up to school to the office and tell them I forgot my lunch money that morning.( she was two proud to apply for free or reduced lunch and as a young kid I just thought I did forget my lunch money never realized mom just didn't give it to me some days because she didn't have it yet tell she was talking about it years later)

I also have sisters that have made poor life choices and wait tables. Those tips today are important to them.

Paul I never thought about leaving a tip for hotel cleaning staff other than when staying on sight at Disney for their Mouse keeping no idea why it tner crossed over to other hotels and staff. At leas one of my sisters was also cleaning hotel room may still be, but I know they don't make much and. have some disgusting messing to clean up sometimes. Thanks for posting that it's somthing I will start doing.

They didn't change the way they tax servers for you to change the way you tip so that it all evens out...

When I waited tables I made $2.13 an hour.

The biggest thing for me to suggest for everyone is next time you are at a big table and someone is paying the check just throw $5 on the table. You and all your friends. If there are ten of you and you leave $50 good for you all. You just ate and drank for free, throwing $5 each down, everyone throwing $5 each, doesn't really cost you anything and makes that servers night. Don't be the guy trying to figure out the math and being like but wait thats $50... just lay your $5 share down and leave. Thats of course if they did a good job. That would be the standard tip if everything went well... add and take away from it from there. Pretty much every tip works like that, big table or not.

and servers... stop interrupting us to ask if we want another water... just set a water down. People aren't eating in your section to be entertained by you. So annoying.

I leave a 20% tip for waitstaff in cash. I also leave a cash tip for the house cleaners at motel rooms I stay in.

What at troll!!

For all decent people who appreciate servers and housekeeping, this question never crossed their mind.

Good grief, get over it!!

I usually add $$ to the tip if there is one of those idiots in the group that has to ask 10 questions, substitutions, and needs salad dressing on the side, water with no ice etc etc etc….

I really think it’s true that you can tell a lot about someone by how they treat people when they don’t not have to be nice. Some people are rude just because they can be.

This story circulated the internet years ago and I thought it was worth hanging onto.

" What goes around comes around "
One day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her.
Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was those chills which only fear can put in you. He said, “I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.”
Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt.
As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn’t thank him enough for coming to her aid.
Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way.
He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, “And think of me.”
He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight.
A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn’t erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan.
After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something written on the napkin.
There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: “You don’t owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I’m helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you.”
Under the napkin were four more $100 bills.
Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day. That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard….
She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, “Everything’s going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson.”
There is an old saying “What goes around comes around.”

What I never really understood about tipping is why you're expected to tip based on how much you spend.

For example, you go to a steakhouse and order a cheeseburger vs. a $60 steak. The wait staff does the same thing regardless, bringing you drinks and a plate of food. But because one plate of food costs more than the other, you are expected to tip more even though the same job would have been done in either circumstance.

I tip in cash always have to make sure it goes in the pocket it was intended for even if I need to break a bigger bill and go back to make sure.

This is just an ECON 101 discussion. Not an emotional one.

If the price of labor goes down because of an industry getting singled out for favorable tax treatment, does the amount paid by consumers go down.

Pretend we're talking about mechanics if it makes it easier.

P.S. I just looked and tipped the waitress 27% yesterday at breakfast. Admittedly, the wife and I lingered a bit finishing our coffee. In case y'all never saw Reservoir Dogs.

You should use Susan B. Anthony dollar coins. There's some irony to it. When the coins fall out, you can pick them up and use them again.

The only thing that’s changed is the governments not taking from folks being paid less than minimum wages that are on their feet all day and putting up with the public. Some folks feel bad if someone is making a decent living that’s a sad deal just good to see folks willing to earn a buck even if it’s mine.

I always tip in cash, even if the bill is paid w/ a card... never less than 20%, usually 25-30%... had kids that were waiters and pizza cooks when they were in college and just after.

We didn't eat out much when I was a kid. For my older brothers they had never even seen a tip before. My oldest brother after high school was hitch hiking through Montana and stopped at a little diner for a cup of soup. ON the way out noticed some money on a table and figured somebody had unintentionally left it and it was fair game. So he helped himself. He never knew for years after that had been a tip for the waitress.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

Having to travel for work, good service can be a welcome treat at the end of a long day. I tip in cash and well.

The fact that the way they are taxed on it has changed, will have no bearing on how much I tip.
