Maybe use a heavy cover crop like oats, rye grain, or buckwheat, rototilled in to boost your organic matter, but in the high heat you'll burn through your organic matter faster...it needs constant cover.

Just ordered the 72"×16" notched wheel cultipacker.

Figured I wouldn't take the chance of the 15" smooth wheels not performing as they should.

Supposed to be here in 3 days...from KY to GA....we'll see if they can pull that off....lol

You'll also want to add fertilizer, especially N in smaller more frequent applications.

For a soil lab I like Waters Labs and use their lab there in GA.

I'll do some research on this and learn more about it....thank you!

Toothed , it breaks up the soil better for better root growth.
Allows more moisture to get to the roots of new plants.
Why pack a soil hard?

That said, wonder if the toothed cultipacker can substitute for the rototiller if your ground is that soft...??

The plots located along the sand ridge on my place are similar to dry beach sand (once disked or roto-tilled.) It’s common to find shark teeth, shell pieces, petrified oysters, etc in the river on one side of the property. So, this is an ancient sand dune/sand bar. But, this sandy dirt packs well after rains. It'll grow food plots, but nutrient leach thru it rapidly, so its rather expensive to manage.

I would grow cover crops, plow them down in the early spring , and use the toothed packer before you seed.

For those curious why you might want a cultipacker.............. [Linked Image]

That was loose tilled ground.......just drove a tractor over it. Green stripe is where the front wheel packed the soil down. You can even see where the tire ribs were.........that had good weed seed to soil contact. A seed in loose soil is an iffy thing.

This^^^^

Yep!

I got the 16" x 72" cultipacker today. Picked it up at a freight terminal an hour north of me.

Good purchase and shipping experience with Sweet Farm Implements in Kentucky. I'd do business with them again.

I think you made the right choice. The smooth wheeled packers are good for very recently prepared ground; they are a must in sugar sand type soils.

The toothed ones are more realistic, because you may get a rain on the prepared ground and harden it before you have a chance to plant it. The toothed packer will help breaking the crust and insure good seed/soil contact.

Yessir.....this ^^^ was part of the reason I went with the toothed version....as all my plots are not sugar sand. Those down in the river bottom have a silt/thin clay texture.

Thanks for info.

Probably wouldn't do that. I dont have enough money (or land) to increase their nutritional intake.

But, maintaining openings in plots does make the killing more efficient.

For sandy type soils go with smooth discs but larger discs if you can find those models. Sand does not have near the soil structure as loams or clays and the larger diameter wheels will penetrate into the sand more and make better seed to soil contact. If unable to find larger discs then adding extra weight maybe helpful.
