We raise goats , it's my mostly my wife's thing. She does it for the milk mainly and it's a nice addition they love noxious weeds lke knapweed and spurge, we used to use them on the neighbors as well untill they started their spraying program. We started with and still have a few Nigerians which are a small breed and have execelent milk but not much at a time and she has Alpine/LaMancha cross does that are large breed and give good milk and more of it at a sitting. The big ones are large enough they have some meat but if you want meat go with boers. I think they are like anything else I've been around, if they like where they are , they are easy enouhg to keep confined, we can leave the road gate open and they graze the ditch and come right back home, our kune pigs were the same way. Getting rid of baby goats is our problem here, the Nigerians are so unbeleiveable cute folks love them but don't want them the big ones seem to sell easier and you can always eat them, the Nigerians aren't worth bothering with in my opinion meat wise. I was going to use our big wethers as pack goats, had one at three years old another younger and started working them but had to sell because I'm just too disabled to the training required but pack goats are another way to sell them and the wethers can bring good money and there's demand for them

There's an old expression about "If you throw a bucket of water at a fence, and it doesn't go through, it'll hold a Goat"!

Every kid needs a Dog and a Curmudgeon.

To me the amount of money spent on the high quality fences you need for goats may very well make the idea very costly or your may not have them browse near the acres you want them to. Goats prefer browse over grazing and that means a lot of your weeds you want controlled may get big enough before being browsed to have seed heads.

When I was in high school (and before) I had a milk goat. Nubian-Toggenburg cross. She produced an average of five quarts of milk a day. I kept her chained and moved the circle every day. Best milk ever. Made soft cheese form time to time.
