I took "sleep in the dust of the Earth" to mean dead.

That makes more sense. "THE many...."

Working in tech writing, and dealing with translations, oftentimes a literal translation is NOT the best option. The idea should be expressed in the target audience's language, using their constructs and meanings.

As an example, I have heard "drum" (like used in a tumbler) translated as "bam-bam" in Polish. They translated it as a drum, percussion instrument. The word may be correct, but the wrong definition.

I've heard the same translation argument for kill vs. murder.
