Was eating lunch in my truck at a park I grew up on.
And I saw a sight ...I haven't seen for a while...
There were 2 kids riding (12-13 years old ) their bikes..
With fishing poles !!!!
I instantly when back to my youth ...that made me smile..
And gave me some hope...lol

'Back in the day' Most every kid had a fishing pole or a BB gun across the handlebars.
There were no school shootings then either.
All about growing up right or getting your rear end warmed up, at school and again at home.

Gotta tell you, Nessie, that is one of the reasons I doubt Wonderful Wife and I will never move. We live kind of out in the country on a corner of County Roads. I can just about throw a rock from our yard to a major landing on the north end of Lake Onalaska, which is a part of the backwaters of the Black and Mississippi Rivers.
She and I have done a lot of work for many years getting kids involved in hunting, fishing, trapping, and other aspects of conservation. It warms our hearts, and tells us it was worth all the time and effort when we see kids on bikes carrying fishing rods and tackle boxes heading to the landing to do some fishin'. They always have that certain look of expectation in their eyes and their pedaling gets faster the closer they get to the landing. We always try to get down there to see how they are doing and offer some encouragement when the fishing is slow.
The spirit is still out there. Yup, there's lots of other things for them to do, but with a good fishing spot, a little encouragement and a "Way to go!" when they pedal away from the landing with a stringer of Bluegills or a fat Bullhead we can keep the spirit alive.

I see a few kids but very few riding a bike. I'm a daily bike rider and do all most all getting around town on a bike. Your post does bring back memories of my youth. Morning baseball practice every kid in town rode a bike then after practice to drug store for a soda or baseball cards and gum. Times have changed IMO for the worst.

When I was a kid, (65 yrs ago) we'd go to a local lake and fish 2-3 days a week in the summer. We'd stop at a small orchard and pick little green apples to nibble on and throw at the geese and each other. Nobody had poles, so we'd ride around looking for busted badmitten rackets in trash cans, sit in the shade and unwind the string. Then we'd go to the dime store in town and buy a pack of the smallest hooks that would go on that 20k lb string, take a small pinch of bread to just cover the barb, and catch a mess of Ghillies. Mom said she'd cook 'em if we cleaned 'em, so we'd have fish fry nearly every Friday.

I used to tell my kids if i went to town to see my friends it was up hill both ways on my bike. They didnt get it at first, like yeah right dad. We lived on the other side of the mountain, i would bike up and over in the morning and back at night.
