I take it that it requires a treated pad that needs replaced so often? How long is a pad good for?

Not sure how long they last. I always forget to turn it off so usually the pad is brown and dried out so I use a new one each time.

I think some guys on here were re treating pads at home. Apparently you can buy the active ingredient, permethrin (sp) in bulk. Might have seen it on YouTube.

You can redo the pads with an eye dropper and pyrethrin and pull the one way valve out of the butane cartridge and refill them. Makes it cheap to run them. Save your pads to reuse in a small zip lock bag.

Been doing this for several years now. Biggest issue for me has been the plastic tips to refill the cartridge. When you get one that works well hang on to it treat it kindly. For some reason they are not all created equally some work better than others.

You can sand the tip down with some fine sandpaper to make it fit if the tip is too big.

Yep already been doing the sanding trick. It don't hurt sometimes to run a knife across make little grove. There is usually one tip like that in multi tips on Scripto can. But I find that one to big. Sometimes just got to play with them tips a bit. I've always been what my mother called a tinker. So I just putz around with those things. If i own it I make it mine. My grand father Im told was a Tool & Die kinda guy. If he was still around he probably make good one from brass.

Is the pyrethrin concentrate I can buy at Home Depot (1%) the stuff I need, or do you use a stronger blend?

It is fine I am sure, I got a little eye dropper with a bottle and mix it with 3 parts water. I soak the pads, let them dry and keep them in a zip lock baggie.

I get 3 hours on each pad and 9 hours from each tank of fuel. I have 3 thermocells and its more than worth whatever it costs.

i shall get some tomorrow. I dont hunt much anymore but they are far more useful than for just hunting. folks up north, you can leave that insect pad off and use them for hand warmers. Thats what I use to do down here when it actually got cold and I was duck hunting. Just a thought
