I find seat belts hard to wear, lost my best friend in high school was buckled in and couldn't get it loose dead in the fire.
Has left a memory I can't get rid of.

Let me sugar coat this

Is this going to be a federal thing or just in Ms.? I haven't heard a thing about it other than this post, but I don't watch the news either.

Some occupants die while buckled up, but hundreds or thousands are spared serious injury by wearing seatbelts. Sort of like smoking tobacco. A few smokers live to a ripe old age, but mortality numbers prove that far more enjoy shorter lifespans. Why bet your life on a loosing hand.

They are not enforcing them here with the exception of Olathe (KC). Get pulled over for a bad tail light or something then get ignorant you will get one.

I won't move my truck unless EVERYONE is buckled up. Had a GF that drove me nuts about it. Had!

It's got to be a miracle any of us over 50 is still living. My god as a kid we climbed and played while mom and or dad drove.
Heck, we even rode in back of pickup trucks. Must be a miracle any of us survived.

If insurance companies support seat belt laws because they reduce injury claims, isn't that absolutely in line with public safety?

The safety of vehicle occupants is in the best interest of an auto insurance company.

I wonder if people should be required to wear helmets while driving? It never ends with the safety nazis.

They could make all cars like race cars and many thousands of lives would be saved annually. I think it should be mostly personal choice on safety equipment.

When they still made full size cars it was not uncommon to see a kid sleeping under the rear window atop the shelf behind the rear seat. Pretty common to see little kids in a car, hot summer, windows down, while Mom was grocery shopping. Yep its a wonder the human race isn't extinct

6 boys in our family. I remember doing all that stuff, from sleeping in rear window to all in back of pickup. I’m convinced the only reason we all survived is we never got in an accident.

Got my doubts on the numbers. Keep in mind who pushed for this.

What would happen to that kid sleeping on the shelf if that car rear-ended someone at 40mph?

Cell phone use while driving is a MUCH more dangerous. Put a switch in them that shuts when inside a car.

1959 Bel-Air......no seatbelts, no airbags, no crumple zones

2009 Malibu....airbags, seatbelts, crumple zones.

Both cars weigh about 3500ish lbs.

I'm against any type of "safety" laws. If folks want to be ignorant they should be free to do so. Seat belt laws are 100% a money generating revenue stream for LE agencies and were pushed by insurance companies who know that not wearing one greatly increases your chances of serious injury or death in an auto accident. They are looking to lower their payouts.

I don't wear one while checking traps on two-tracks or driving the dirt roads around camp but any time I hit a hard road I buckle up.

A few years ago my wife was rear-ended by a young women who failed to realize traffic was stopped. My wife saw her coming and tried to get out of her way but there was no place to go. My wife is one of those people who refuse to wear a seat belt.

She was thrown from the driver's seat to the passenger side where her head cracked the windshield and got wedged between the corner of the windshield and the top of the dash. We've never figured out how she didn't break her neck.

If she'd have had her seat belt on she'd have very likely been uninjured.

She still doesn't wear one.

Eh...wot?
