Fishing trick ? Had some old times tell me about how they would have a bucket full of holes or a cage hung over a place they wanted to fish with a tree limb or strong pole and drop roadkill in it eveyone and then. Files would come lay eggs maggots would fall out and drop in the water and fish would congregate under and around it had one ole guy said after a while they would just bite anything that plopped in the water . Wrap a lil cotton twine around a hook and you could pull in a mes of a fish quick.

Know one guy who have a pulley system across his post . Has about 10-15 five gal buckets stretched across that he'll re stock once a month or so with road kill . Holes drilled a bit from the bottom to let the maggots come out. Cheap fish food he said

Never got around to trying it . Anyone done it ?

Wouldn't just stretching a gill net across the area be easier?

I have nothing clever to put here.

not exactly but I have heard of guys that tossed all their carcasses in a deep spot next to a bridge where they had a nice catfish hole.

they claimed feed them all the fall carcasses and then have good catfish size come spring and be out there fishing soon as it wasn't too cold.

I would be surprised if there was not a law against both in WI.

and I know there is a law against gill nets unless you have a commercial license and that is very specific waters

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

As someone one who's actually tired gill netting in ponds and stuff .....it don't work as well as you think....well for anything that not like a bass

Buuut anyhow that now really the idea . It's more like a deer or coon feeder . Just keeps them right here all the time so you don't have to go looking for them building a location basically

Some of my uncle's old pond management books mentioned doing that. They also talked about having a meat grinder mounted where it hung above the water, right off of a dock, so you could grind your fish scraps and any fish you didn't want, into pieces the other fish could easily eat.

Done it with chickens, never with fish. I bet it would work

An ole boy fishing the Mississippi river had a honey hole on a sharp bend where a giant tree had fallen in. The fishing faded once the weather got hot.
He went back out there after a long drought and found out what the attraction was and why it faded away.
There was bib overalls hanging from one of the limbs of that big ole tree.
Good news was, they finally figured out whatever happened to Uncle Ellis earlier that Spring...

Yes. I have seen folks set up a basket that they threw old carcasses in. Maggots kept the fish fat.

I do it on trout streams around here, but I typically hang them from a bridge with a deep hole
I use wax worms for bait and pierce a lot of lips with a #12 hook

Wolfie I think where you're at it would attract gators as well as fish

I tried it years ago on a small scale. Put couple cans of dog food with holes punched in them under my dock. Can't say that it ever drew in any number of fish. Do know that if you wanted to sit on the dock and fish. The stink can be a bit over whelming. Can't imagine a guy would want whole big caged carcass hanging up wind of where you were going to sit fish. Probably better put the stinking mess next to the neighbors.
But I dont know why it wouldn't work any different than light over water.

WD,

Several years ago my boss at the time had a roughly 2 acre pond. He built a couple contraptions that hung out over the pond. He would put roadkill or nuisance coons and groundhogs that I caught in them. He said they helped fatten the bluegills and bass up. I know they worked as far as getting maggots to fall in the pond, but not sure if the fish got much bigger.
