Once watched a Poly Choke on a 16 gauge depart with the shot and was.
Into.the water, lol

I currently have a Chinese copy of a Poly Choke on a 12 ga muzzleloader.
Basically, they cut a few slits the first inch and a half of the barrel, then stuck a hose clamp on it.

Gun failed on second shot.
But not the choke!!!

i had a old savage 20 gauge pump with one. i sawed it off and used it for quail. traded it to my brother in law. he keeps it in the house loaded with buck shot. the one i had would not throw good patterns till i cut it off. worked fine close in after that. never tried slugs

IC is a good call for slugs.

I never objected to poly chokes. They added versatility to a shotgun and are certainly quicker to change than choke tubes. And they added a little weight to the muzzle which is a good thing. It tends to help keep the barrel in motion. I think it’s a safe bet that the vast majority of birds, clay or feathered, are missed because the shooter stopped the swing and shot behind.

They look right on older guns. I have one on a model 12 16 gauge. Fun old gun.

My dad had one installed on his Ithaca M 37 Featherlight back in the 50's. I hunted small game and squirrels with it quite a bit for several years after I inherited it.

It patterned good, threw patterns close to what the dial indicated. I liked being able to quickly change choke settings when I got in thick brush verses open fields. With choke tubes, I put in an imp.cyl. and a mod. in my O/U and never change them during the small game seasons.

I borrowed an older 410 for spring turkey this year. Doc had told me no long guns until July but I didn't want to go to Turkey camp for ten days and not hunt (only guide for others). So a friend lent me a Mossberg M 183 from the 50's-60's that had a poly-choke on it. Tightened down all the way it threw a barely acceptable full choke pattern at 30 yards. I managed to kill two, one at 17 yards and the other at 22 yards.

Eh...wot?

I have one on a M12 16ga. The barrel is 24-25”. I have used it to kill 5 quail on a single covey rise with 4 shots. It is also a heck of a dove gun, like mentioned earlier, the extra weight on the front makes a difference.

Had one on a free gun. Never liked it. It was shooting buckshot at the time.
