Okay, heres the crib notes. Probably the single best episode of all Trek. The Enterprise encounters an alien deep space probe. Upon investigation it emits an energy beam which locks onto Captain Jean Luc Picard rendering him unconscious. The crew is unable to break the link between the probe and Picard without killing him. Meanwhile Picard awakens in "his" bed having just recovered from a bad delirious fever being cared for by his wife and best friend. Picard initially tries to return to his ship but is assured that it was just a fever dream. Eventually Picard settles into his life, fathers children and does science research while learning to play a ressikan flute in his off time.. He realizes that the drought his planet is experiencing isnt just a drought but that his sun is going supernova. He brings this to the attention of his govt just to be told that they are aware of it but they lack any sort of technology to save themselves. Picard lives a full life has grandchildren and near the end of his life he is reunited with his long dead wife and best friend his children and grandchildren to watch the launch of a deep space probe.
Back on the Enterprise the crew traces the probe's route back to a star system that went supernova thousands of years ago. The probe having completed it's mission breaks the link and deactivates itself. Picard fully recovers and when the probe is brought on board it contains a single ressikan flute.
