Try a can of corn or cream corn for the liquid, really yummy!

Do not add sugar. It ain't cornbread any longer if its sweetened. Save your sugar for the tea.
Also, leave out the peppers, corn, toy babies, etc. Make it straight with a crisp edge. It ain't cake.
My favorite is cooked in a cast iron skillet with the lid on. Also really like it fried into fritters.

How serious is it? My first fight with my wife came over beans n cornbread. She made it like her momma did: sweet cornbread & "dry" beans. I suggested she make it like my momma did (real cornbread & lots of water for juice in the beans). I could have probably worded it differently. We laugh about the outcome all these years later. She went to the sink, filled a glass of water & poured it in my plate of beans & cornbread. She then told me "there's you some water for the bean juice." I just ate.
Seriously, if you have a wife who can't do pinto beans, cornbread, fried taters, sliced red onion, pepper sauce, and wilted salad, might be time to consider trade-in value. smile

Real cornbread doesn't have sugar, but good cornbread does.

Wholeheartedly agree with ya Preacherman ! If the current Mrs cannot provide a simple meal like that after coming in from cold weather trapping all day. Might be time to reevaluate her abilities as a " good woman " I personally have warmed up a many of supper of just the above items to ward off the chill .However ya forget one slight item and that's a big serrano pepper to get things a rollin.

Stuffing gets stuffed in something, dressing does not its just baked in a pan. Love corn bread dressing. I don't trust stuffing! Poultry juices that could be cooked or not ..I'll pass.

this but forget shortening use all lard and toss the measuring spoon out just give it a couple two tree good spoons worth you don't want to tilt the pan to get the bottom , you want to tilt the pan to get the sides.

when that comes out of the oven , have a stick of butter cut into pats an spread them around and let them melt in .

Mama would make fried cornbread like that. Thin out the batter a little bit then drop it by spoonfuls onto a griddle.

This. Has to have sugar and has to have buttermilk in the recipe.

The missus definitely knows how to cook a pot of beans because she won't eat beans without crumbling up cornbread to spoon the beans over. Got to have that pot liquor.

My only complaint is that she don't use enough hot pepper but I like stuff alot spicier than she can handle.
