I’m going to try to make about 15 gallons of waxed dirt this year. What’s your alls recommendation for wax to dirt ratio? I’m seeing 1 cup of wax to 2 gallons of first all the way to 3 cups of wax per gallon of dirt. I’ll be getting the dirt from inside an old barn if that matters.

I go with 2 or 3 cups of wax per gallon of dirt
Most important thing is to get your dirt bone dry before waxing
If you go to heavy with the wax it will clump up as it cools off

Just make sure AFTER you make it that you spread it out to dry again. This will make sure any moisture is gone. If you don't your likely to have mold. I've been there.

As for the ratio make a small batch with what you think is around your lowest amount. Then test it to see is water beads up on it. You can always add more.

I'm sure there are other ways that are probably easier but I go with 2 to 3 cups shredded per gal in a large roasting pan on the grill (large enough to hold a gal of sifted dirt plus spare room ) dry sifted dirt first stirring frequently til dirt is hot, start adding wax while stirring, once completely mixed and cooled sift into storage buckets so not also storing clumps. Suggest not using plastic spatula for stirring hot dirt or for mixing dirt and wax

If you over wax it just add more dry dirt that will help keep it from lumping up I prefer course dirt to reduce clumping, improving drainage powdered dirt is nothing but problems.

Might be leery about the odors in old barn dirt...Was there equipment or livestock in there?

After I wax the dirt, I place a sample in an empty butter container then put a small depression in the center of the dirt and place water in the depression. I wait 24 hours to see if the water soaked into the dirt. If it didn’t then it is ready for use. I used to not wait this long and ended up with traps frozen in.
