I need fencing and I would be running a small hand full. I'm thinking fencing about 13 of the 96acres to start with. I'm thinking just enough to eat for free and cover some more farm expenses at first.

Rent a skid loader and post pounder. Put 6" corner post in then a 4" post every 25-40', run 5 high tensile wires and get a fencer with a great ground rod. Your boys should be able to have it done in a couple days.

Yep sold out last 20 something a few months back , made a good penny off of them but man looking at the prices of cattle ... Getting back in would be a bit rough ... Unless you go the bottle calf route I guess

I had to quit buying cow at the groceria because of the crazy high prices. Pig is still pretty reasonable and has been for a long time.

Holstein calves are roughly $1,000, roughly same for beef calves. Didn't you have corriente or some other smaller horned cattle? That'd explain the price difference

O yeah I keep forgetting y'all got them high bred papered cows . All our are mitts for the most part bramer, black Angus, Red Angus and Corriete in some kinda mix are the mains down here

I try to shoot 3 deer minimum every fall. It helps your beef and pork go further. May try for 5 this year.

Been a good few years for a small time producer like myself of black angus cattle. Basically just name my price on the hoof if someone wants to buy off of my farm. Eric

Throw in a charolais bull and sell the calves as weaners, you'll get almost as much as us with large, nothern mutt cattle

You aren’t going to run a handful on 13 acres. Two would be the most on that acreage and that’s with optimum grass.

3-4 steers would be ideal and keep you in beef well, with corn being cheap just pull them off grass if it gets low and shove corn to the bigger steers and leave the little guys out on grass.

cattle prices are better than they have ever been just contracted 600 lbs steer calves for 3.85 a pound. i will be able to waste alot of money buying fur again this year. lol

Smallest beef herd in 74 years and that was when there were about half the population we have now. One would think that beef producers would really be raking in the money but with drought in a lot of the cow calf regions, ranchers need to buy feed that they normally do not need to buy and there are many who are not able to make a living, so they are selling out. That means the short supply will be here for the foreseeable future. We need the economy to stay strong and keep the work force up with limited inflation. Once the consumers start feeling cash tight the prices could drop even with supply shortages. We import about 12-15% of our beef we consume which is about equal to what we export. Mexico and Canada are the two largest suppliers of feeder cattle for our feed lots and that is about 20% of the total feeders the US uses per year. We may think that corn, grain etc. are cheap but if you need to buy forages to feed cows to give you weaned calves there is not much margin in that currently. Also at these prices it is risky to buy breeding stock and hope these prices hold. Unless the weather changes we may be on record for one of the largest if not the largest corn crop in history. That helps feed lots but not cow calf raisers.

To much money in crops,and to many rich folks buying up farms,ranches!

Cheap calves are still available in many places out in the middle of nowhere. I know 3 different guys who buy calves and other animals at small rural auctions and farms, in several states. They just take the animals to another auction within a day or two and resell them. They never even bother to take them off the trailers.
