Since my youth, it doesn't seem things are evolving in a positive direction. It seems more like the zombie apocalypse.

I see it more as adaptation. You must adapt to changes or get left behind, Evolution would suggest that nature could predict what changes are going to happen.
Just the right amount of whelm.

Some species are highly adaptable and do better with change. Humans are one of them. Coyotes another.
Some are so specialized that they're doomed. Most of the species that have ever lived on earth have already gone extinct.

The Earth is constantly changing and has natural cycles. We know it’s true because it’s measurable. So do the species that live on it adapt with it or is everything static? adapt at it's simplest say a food source changes lets say a bird used to eat a particular bug for one of it's primary food sources. that bug gets wiped out , the new food source is a bug that burrows deeper , birds with a longer beak eat better , do better and thus breed because they are the ones with the energy to do so. now 2 parents with longer beak have offspring with longer beaks , thus evolution. 5 generations out which might only be 10-20 years the long beak is the norm.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

on the flip side if you look at my family , thick blood , great clotting , the issue is die at 63-65 of blood clots causing a heart attack
but it doesn't matter all the generations are 22 years apart , we breed well in our 20s and the strong bodies and good clotting gets us through work and accidents pre modern medicine
vs if you have health issues that kill half the kids in their first 15 years you don't breed as well and that trait gets lost with your line ending.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I think of how the K9s adapted to the coyotes moving east back in the 70s the wiser fox moved into the farm places to avoid conflict with the yotes the dumber one were killed. Lots of uncontrolled critters have moved into urban areas and learned to thrive off the surplus pets and garbage so that’s something.
The UP potato farmers fed the cull taters to the local deer the deer learned to dig potatoes on their own after a while so I’d say they adapted.
Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

The Earth is constantly changing and has natural cycles. We know it’s true because it’s measurable. So do the species that live on it adapt with it or is everything static? They evolve and adapt. It's been proven countless times. For instance, you no longer NEED your gall bladder or Appendix. You also have the remnants of a tail bone.
