I have a big choke cherry tree in my yard. I was wondering, are choke cherries good for anything besides making you pucker?

Makes good pancake syrup. I bet it would based on what yotetrapper's post said about it. Got a really heavy crop on the tree this year. Might have to try making some.

In an aesthetic point of view, I planted two some years ago. They provide wonderful long blooms of white flowers that smell like honey in spring. Honey bees love them. Later, they offer berries that help birds in nesting season. In fall, the leaves turn wonderful shades of pastel colours, apricot, salmon, violet, orange, reds . No other tall shrub or tree has so many pastel colours .
The only thing they need is keeping the shoots on runners from growing up around them if a single trunk is wanted.

The only thing they need is keeping the shoots on runners from growing up around them if a single trunk is wanted. That's true. I keep cutting the shoots every summer. I wonder if the birds pucker up when they eat the berries like I do?

No you all are making it sound much worse than it really is when you grab a hand full of chokecherrys then eat them or enter is a pit spitting contest ha ha
I like eating them right off the tree , or the syrup or jelly made from them or even wine is darn good .
Wild plums and buffalo berries are good eating after the first frost .

As others have said, they make excellent syrup. My trees are LOADED this year too. Between the berries, hazelnuts and acorn crop, the bear hunters may have a tough time this Fall.
I have nothing clever to put here.

I have one right next to our cabin(25’) that is loaded with fruit every year and not a single one makes it to picking ripe. Not birds getting them but chipmunks stripping them green. It’s too close to other trees to make some kind of trunk barrier.
I've learned enough thru the years to now know that I don't know enough. KNOWLEDGE IS FREEDOM.

Everything loves them from coyotes to bears coons and skunks. Yesterday I saw a hen pheasant up in at tree eating them.
I can't believe that cop put me in the back seat when I clearly called shotgun.

Be sure to strain the little seeds out with cheesecloth. Them little seeds get stuck in the teeth badly. They do make good jelly. We also have a great crop of elderberries and wild plums this year. All the wild critters will like it. The past couple years haven't been good for wild fruit.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

As was said choke cherry syrup is fine table fare.
Good jelly too.
I actually like to eat them off the tree as well.

Proudly banned from the NTA.
