What is the reason to set an exposed pan for cats?

Lots of reasons in my mind. Exclude K9s, no need trying to bury a traps in frozen or rocky ground, ease of guiding, no chance of freezing etc.

Oh and it works...

Also helps with less freeze down issues cats step on things more so than K9s do. A guy in Arizona blind set traps on cat trails with some sand on the pans and did well on cats

to me I think it looks like a smooth spot to place your foot. As a kid mink trappin I liked the B & L traps better than Victors because of the smooth pan. It seemed to make a difference......jk

No dry dirt needed, and it gives your cat- critter one place to step if you guide them correctly. Also makes for a quick set. I don't carry dry dirt or a sifter when setting cat traps. [Linked Image]

GS is right on. As well as providing the perfect place to step (JK I like an asphalt shingle to top the pan) you can eliminate all other places and when done right it's tough to miss the cat.
